Top Gun is coming to a battlefield near you. Battlefield 6 and the second-highest-grossing film of 2022 are staging a crossover event, one that coincides with the upcoming season of Battlefield 6 and Battlefield REDSEC (the standalone battle royale mode), which EA described as “the franchise’s largest seasonal update to date.” This is like the Super Bowl for mostly well-made blockbuster entertainment with concerning ties to the military-industrial complex.

The crossover is a collaboration between EA and Paramount Games Studio. It will bring the F-18/Super Hornet and F-14 Tomcat fighter planes to the game alongside Top Gun: Maverick characters and new modes. A trio of Maverick pilots will appear in-game, fully voiced by their original performers: Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), Lt. Robert “Bob” Floyd (Lewis Pullman), and Adm. Solomon “Warlock” Bates (Charles Parnell). There will also be Top Gun-inspired skins and cosmetics.

“It’s a huge honor to appear in a long-running franchise like Battlefield with its millions of fans, and talented people working on it,” Miles Teller said in a press release. “And with Top Gun, it’s like two titans meeting.”

As for the modes, there’s Carrier Strike, which “pits naval, air, and ground forces against one another as teams seek to destroy the enemy aircraft carrier in a showdown creating an incredible blending of Battlefield and Top Gun’s defining characteristics.” All of this will be part of the game’s Season 4: Pacific Front update, which is out on July 21. It will introduce the new map, Tsuru Reef, which supports the previously mentioned naval combat. Other new vehicles include the RCB-90 Patrol Boat and the 7.7m NSW RHIB transport barge.

New weapons are on the way as well. There’s the BROD 3 carbine for close-range combat; the EF88 bullpup assault rifle for mid- to long-range combat; and the VSSM, a low-volume, high-damage Designated Marksman Rifle with a suppressor and subsonic ammunition for stealth. There will also be new attachments for several weapons. As for REDSEC, it’s getting a ranked mode. There’s a long list of balance changes that affect player movement, vehicles and more.

Battlefield 6 launched on Oct. 10, 2025, to a largely positive response, generally earning praise for returning the series to Battlefield 3- and 4-era gameplay. It made the biggest launch in series history, selling over 7 million copies in three days. Fan response has been a bit up-and-down, with the game debuting at 76% approval on Steam before dipping to a “Mixed” 67% score due to Battle Pass issues and controversial balance changes. Others eventually became dissatisfied with the small map sizes and more Call of Duty-esque movement. It will be interesting to see whether the seemingly significant upcoming update can bring lapsed players back into the fold.
