Puzzle games have long been a staple genre in the video game industry, with tonnes of variety ranging from 2D platform adventures right the way through to entirely explorable 3D worlds. Over the years, many different titles have brought their own innovations and originality to the genre, though not every title has been remembered for its contribution.

10 Best Adventure Games Still Stuck on Older Systems
These games aren't doing much adventuring these days.
The following games were not only beloved during their time, and many have matured as throwback classics of the genre, but most of them have also faded into virtual irrelevancy in modern times. So let's take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of the best puzzle games which have sadly now been forgotten by time.
10 The Lost Vikings
The Ancestral All-Father of Puzzle Games
The Lost Vikings is certainly a relic of the past nowadays, but in the early 90s this represented the cutting-edge graphical fidelity of the era. Largely considered the definitive puzzle-platformers of 2D systems, the Lost Vikings games were almost as popular as the likes of Mario to western audiences, though the series never managed to achieve the longevity of its Japanese rival.
The developer, Silicon and Synapse, would go on to become an establishment by the name of Blizzard Entertainment. You might have heard of them before, however, sadly, you might not have heard about The Lost Vikings as they are, indeed, lost to the passage of time.
9 Contraption Maker
Limitless Creative Complexity
The spiritual successor to The Incredible Machine, this puzzle game blends creativity with physics-based contraptions and has players either complete or build their own level designs. Personally, I find the most fun to be in creating my own levels or attempting to complete other player-created designs, but even so, there are over 100 puzzles included as standard for playing to try to overcome.
Ranging from fans and kettles to explosives and footballs, the real fun of Contraption Maker is playing with the game's physics and pulling off stunts which at first may seem impossible. If you've ever seen the opening sequence of a Wallace and Gromit movie, you've essentially seen what Contraption Machine has in store for you.
8 Antichamber
A Case-Study in Puzzle Variety
Antichamber is one of those games that has such a distinctive aesthetic that it's almost impossible not to recognize it after you've laid eyes on it for the first time. Many different types of puzzle are incorporated into its levels to the point where it could almost be considered a showcase for varied puzzle design. Equipped with a mysterious cube-generating tool, you'll have to draw lines, unlock doorways, fill out pathways and alter the surrounding environment in order to progress.

These are the best and most puzzling games for best buds to play around in.
Despite receiving Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam, the game has yet to receive any kind of sequel or spin-off, in part due to the fact that it was created entirely by a solo developer.
7 The Swapper
A Charming Claymation Puzzle-Platformer
The Swapper is a criminally underrated sci-fi puzzle game from the PS3 era which sadly faded into obscurity and hasn't been revived since. Generating some incredibly glowing reviews thanks to its charming art style, cool level design and unique concept, The Swapper is fondly remembered as a 2D puzzle platformer that was way ahead of its time.
Using a device to clone yourself, you can then take control of the created clones, which is extremely useful for overcoming obstacles and working around the many puzzles the game sets out before you. What really makes the game stand out though, is its claymation aesthetic and superb lighting technology, which combine to create a very homely and laid-back atmosphere.
6 Crayon Physics Deluxe
Satisfying Your "Inner Child"
Crayon Physics Deluxe is a unique concept, and it's quite surprising that nothing has really replicated it ever since. This game centers around drawing solutions to different puzzles, whether it's a simple bridge design or a full-on space rocket. In addition to its charming aesthetic, the game's physics also make it extremely fun to play. Objects have real weight and properties to them, which only serves to make it more satisfying when your own creations are animated to life.
Don't be fooled by the Crayon Physics Deluxe's elementary school art style, though. Some of these puzzles are very complex and difficult to solve if you're not thinking along the correct lines. Sadly, we haven't seen another iterations of this game since the 2008 version.
5 Lemmings
What Happened To These Guys?
Lemmings is one of those classic titles which old school gamers still remember with a fond half-grin. The inspiration behind many similar games which followed thereafter, Lemmings was all about overcoming environmental puzzles through sheer force of will. With over 100 levels to complete, the original Lemmings was a sensation when it first launched all the way back in 1991.
The game has received several follow-ups and spin-offs ever since, with the 2006 remake being among the most popular in the series. However, none quite managed to achieve the same level of hype or praise as the original Amiga version. Much like the beloved Worms series, Lemmings remains a nostalgic staple of a time when games were a little bit simpler.
4 World of Goo
Too Little Too Late
World of Goo was a very creative concept when it first came out, and one that has not really been successfully replicated ever since. The game centers around using little black 'Goo' nodes to piece together shapes and constructions which will help you pass through each level. While it may seem like a very simple concept at first, the game's physics can make it a real challenge.
Although a 2025 sequel attempted to revive the franchise, it didn't quite meet the expectations or garner the same amount of attention and fandom as the original. It's a shame because the game's unique and likable art style combines perfectly with its tough puzzles and level designs to create a game that feels difficult yet light-hearted at the core. It just might need some slight adjustments to its formula in order to bring the series back into the spotlight once again.

As far as point-and-click puzzles go, Escape From Rosecliffe Island is up there with the very best. This forgotten gem perfectly blends complex and thought-provoking levels with a slightly eerie yet childlike aesthetic which perfectly combine to give the game its unique atmosphere.
Having been moored on the mysterious island, you'll need to collect various keys in order to escape the game's different levels as you progress through a variety of well-designed settings. The game predominantly works with word puzzles, giving clues or unorthodox hints in order to steer you towards finding answers.
The clues range from very simple and obvious to absolute head-scratchers which will have you wondering exactly which little nook you might have overlooked on your last inspection of the family garden or art studio. The game is pretty light-heated, and not scary despite its ominous vibe, making it a near-perfect relaxing puzzle game.

Ballance is one of those games which, if you've played it, you're unlikely to forget for quite some time. This simplistic yet slightly psychedelic puzzle game sees players take control of a ball which can transform into different materials — namely wood, paper or stone, which affect its movement physics.

10 Forgotten 3D Platformers That Need A Remake
They may not have been big hits in their own time, but the remake treatment could do these 3D platformers some good.
Players have to navigate through a series of complex levels without falling off the track, all the while trying to complete the levels in the quickest time possible. The game can be a remarkably addictive challenge, and some of the levels are so beautifully designed that it is a pure joy simply to pass through them. Unfortunately, Ballance is little-known these days, but it is proof that simplistic designs on a solid concept can go a long way towards making a very good game.
1 Kororinpa: Marble Mania
A Classic Wii Puzzle Gem

Kororinpa: Marble Mania and its sequel, Marble Saga, are similar to Ballance in style, but take things to another level of craziness and complexity. Rather than changing between three elements, the marble in Kororinpa can change into all kinds of different substances with varied properties, and the environments feature detailed designs.
The main challenge of the game is to balance the ball on the course, and this is done through the use of tilt mechanics with the Wii controls. This is one of those standout solo Wii games you can get lost in for hours, and every level feels like a genuine achievement to complete. Unfortunately, we haven't seen anything in the series since 2009, and it seems unlikely that it will make a return anytime soon.
