Onimusha: Way of the Sword marks the Capcom action franchise’s return after a 20-year hiatus. It was originally set to launch into a Grand Theft Auto 6-fueled traffic jam in late September, but the sequel’s release date has now been moved up to avoid the splash damage.
“Onimusha: Way of the Sword is now launching on September 4, 2026,” Capcom announced last night. Previously set to release on September 25, the game will now become available to play three weeks earlier, which technically turns it into a summer blockbuster. The company also noted that players who pre-ordered the game on Switch 2 are getting refunded and will need to place new orders for the new release date.
“We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” Capcom wrote. “Pre-orders for the physical edition, including those placed via e-Capcom, will not be cancelled.” This prompted some funny replies since Onimusha is a game key card on Switch 2. “Physical edition? What physical edition?” wrote one fan.
Onimusha is shaping up to continue the Japanese publisher’s recent winning streak, especially if it can iron out some difficulty balancing issues, and this latest bit of musical chairs on the calendar will hopefully give more people an opportunity and inclination to check it out. The game was previously slated to arrive just one day after Control: Resonant and Silent Hill: Townfall, alongside a bunch of other releases that have all been crammed into September to give GTA 6‘s November launch as wide a berth as possible.
Of course, even with this latest shift, Onimusha is still right in the thick of things. It will be arriving just days after Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, Star Wars Zero Company, and The Blood of Dawnwalker. Who will be the first to avoid the throng of new game releases by biting the bullet and jumping to a nearly cleared calendar in November? We can’t let Godzilla and Barbie have all the fun.
