Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).
If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.
It seems that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the RPG from Sandfall Interactive that captured a legion of passionate fans in 2025, didn't just sweep the board at the latest edition of The Game Awards.
During that ceremony, it already made history as the biggest winner in the show's existence, taking home nine trophies and surpassing The Last of Us Part II’s previous record. Now, the game has officially cemented its place in gaming history by surpassing Elden Ring as the title with the highest number of Game of the Year (GOTY) awards ever recorded!
A Historic Achievement For Expedition 33
The record began to be widely reported this Wednesday, following the conclusion of most major 2025 award ceremonies. This historic data comes courtesy of pretty hard-working research on the ResetEra forums, led by user Angie, who has been meticulously tracking every GOTY win for Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 across the globe.
The tracking includes every possible award category you can imagine, ranging from major industry ceremonies, such as The Game Awards and the Golden Joystick Awards, to gaming-focused media outlets, player choice awards, and even specialized podcasts.

Clair Obscur is my pick for the best game of 2025? But, how does it fare in the best of all time debate?
Oh, and to ensure the credibility of the data, specific eligibility guidelines were followed and detailed in the original post. These include websites, magazines, newspapers, and broadcasts that have been active for at least a year, possess a multi-person staff, and do not focus exclusively on a single platform.
And the final number resulting from this research is quite staggering! According to it, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has already been named Game of the Year by 436 specialized outlets, officially overtaking the previous record of 429 awards held by FromSoftware’s acclaimed masterpiece, Elden Ring.
To put this into perspective, here is the updated Top 3 of the most awarded games of all time:
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – 436
- Elden Ring – 429
- The Last of Us Part II – 326
What makes this achievement even more shocking is that the number is likely to grow, since several ceremonies have yet to take place, including the DICE Awards (February 12), Game Developers Choice Awards (March 12), the BAFTA Games Awards (April 17), and the Algeria Game Awards (January 23), alongside some prominent player choice polls from VGCharts and ResetEra itself.

Up to this point, Sandfall Interactive’s masterpiece is essentially competing against itself to see just how high the bar can be set! Pretty crazy.
Last but not least, the ResetEra research also highlighted other impressive statistics regarding the highly acclaimed RPG. For instance, the game now holds the record for the most Player's Choice awards in history with 125 wins. And it also maintains a win percentage of 70% of all available GOTY awards for its release year – a ratio that places it among all-time legends like Street Fighter II and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
So yes, it is a truly unprecedented run for a new IP that has now officially reached the summit of the industry. And I must say that, in our review, we certainly saw this domination coming. We wrote: "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the frontrunner for Game of the Year. It's a bold statement, but one that is fitting of an equally bold game." You can read the full article right here.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is currently available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC (via Steam and Epic Games Store).
