Not every development studio can say they have been up and running for 26 years, and it is even rarer to find one maintaining a single live-service project for 16 of them! Yet, that is precisely what Cryptic Studios achieved with Star Trek Online, the classic free-to-play MMORPG based on the iconic Star Trek franchise, which originally made its debut all the way back in 2010.
Now, after a decade and a half of continuous space exploration, the studio has officially launched the game’s newest seasonal update, titled Star Trek Online: Undiscovered.
When a live-service game manages to survive in the volatile modern gaming landscape for this long, it transitions from a mere video game into a certified cultural institution. And this latest expansion actually reflects that in a way, since it arrives at a beautifully symbolic moment, coinciding with the broader 60th anniversary of the legendary sci-fi television franchise itself. So, for fans of the MMORPG, it certainly feels like a magical time (and also the best one) to welcome an entire new, ambitious season.
A Fresh Dynamic at the Helm
Before diving into what awaits players in Undiscovered, it is important to remember that Cryptic Studios underwent some major internal changes earlier this year. For starters, former CEO and MMO heavyweight Jack Emmert made a triumphant return to head the company once again, bringing a whole new era to the studio following its strategic acquisition by Arc Games.
While it will surely take time to analyze the long-term impact of these executive changes, the title’s freshly launched season already showcases a distinct shift in creative philosophy. Executive producer Thomas Marrone, for instance, highlighted the refreshing energy that the returning CEO has brought to the development floor in a recent interview with PC Gamer.
“I'm really grateful to have Jack back,” Marrone shared. “Jack has encouraged us to think about new ways of building content for the game that isn't just the same thing over and over again.”
Marrone went on to explain that, prior to this executive shift, the team had found itself trapped in a comfortable, predictable rhythm of simply deploying isolated content packages. While metrics proved the fanbase thoroughly enjoyed the routine, Emmert’s return introduced an entirely new mandate to try fresh things and give players something genuinely unique with every major update – and that’s precisely why Undiscovered is now live on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store!
Reimagining the Final Frontier and the Klingon Front

Now, finally time to dive into Star Trek Online: Undiscovered! Its content is actually a complete, ground-up remake of one of the game's most nostalgic campaigns: the classic “The Ultimate Klingon” narrative arc.
Bypassing the routine of adding localized standalone content onto an aging structural base, the Undiscovered season also actively breathes modern life into a foundational piece of the MMORPG's history.
Now, finally time to dive into Star Trek Online: Undiscovered! Its content is actually a complete, ground-up remake of one of the game's most nostalgic campaigns: the classic “The Ultimate Klingon” narrative arc.
In the premier remade episode of this updated campaign, titled “The Kuvah’Magh”, players are transported straight back to the critical narrative backdrop of the year 2409. And the storyline follows a tense, incredibly fragile attempt at securing a historical peace treaty between the Federation and the Klingon Empire. So, to deliver a cinematic narrative experience for both seasoned veterans and newcomers alike, Cryptic successfully brought back two beloved Star Trek: Voyager icons to voice their original roles: Robert Picardo brilliantly steps back into his role as the Doctor, while Lisa LoCicero returns to deliver a commanding performance as Lieutenant Miral Paris.
According to the studio, this modernized campaign completely shifts the experience by pairing the classic narrative beats with technical optimizations and gameplay overhauls.
On top of that, the update also expands space traversal mechanics via the newly deployed Deep Space Encounters system, which basically overhauls the core exploration loop by populating the Alpha, Beta, and Delta quadrants with procedural, repeatable encounters that feature dynamic objectives, unique enemy configurations, and varied tactical scenarios every time you drop out of warp.
Last but definitely not least, the centerpiece of the update is the official Undiscovered seasonal event itself, tasking players with directly thwarting the dangerous operational plans of the rogue Klingon Ambassador B’vat. And it will have a bunch of rewards attached to it, such as unique weapons, starship traits, and even a Klingon starship drawing visual inspiration from memorable screen appearances across Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Lower Decks. Oh, nostalgia, right? And you can check its launch trailer right below:
Fortunately for PC players, they can already jump into the Undiscovered territory. However, console players will have to wait just a bit longer, since the expansion will officially debut on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S later this month on July 29.
