The new Star Wars series Maul — Shadow Lord, an animated midquel show that expands on the history of Sith warrior Darth Maul, debuts on April 6. In a rare show of confidence for a Star Wars project, Lucasfilm president and chief creative officer Dave Filoni has already announced the series' season 2 renewal.

The series is set after Darth Maul's apparent death in The Phantom Menace and spider-legged resurrection in the Clone Wars animated series, but before his most recent apparent death in Star Wars: Rebels. Shadow Lord follows Maul (voiced by Sam Witwer) as he works to build a criminal empire by undermining organized crime on the planet Janix. The series brings in a host of new characters and new revelations about Maul's history. Interest in the character steadily grew after Phantom Menace, and Darth Maul has been the center of several Star Wars comics arcs, in addition to his appearances in Clone Wars and Rebels. Maul — Shadow Lord is the first series centered on the seething Sith apprentice, his operations, and his ongoing search for an apprentice who meets his standards.

Filoni did not reveal a timeline for the show's second season or an intended release date. That may come in the next month or two, as season 1 continues its rollout. The 10-episode premiere season of Maul — Shadow Lord debuts on Disney Plus on April 6, with a two-episode initial drop. Episodes will release two at a time on Mondays through Star Wars Day, May 4.
