If there's one thing everyone who saw Superman can agree on, it's this: Protect Krypto at all costs. The lovable super-dog played a pivotal role in that movie, and he's set to be even more important in the DC Studios follow-up Supergirl, which flies into theaters this summer and just got a plot-heavy new trailer.
Directed by Craig Gillespie with a screenplay by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed 2022 comic Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow from writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely. And just like in that comic, the inciting incident that kicks off this story is going to be extremely heartbreaking to watch.
Check out the trailer now and then keep reading for a breakdown of what you just saw:
In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, an alien girl named Ruthye seeks out the titular hero and asks for help getting revenge on Krem, an evil pirate-assassin who killed Ruthye's father. Unfortunately, Supergirl's first encounter with Krem doesn't go well. He shoots two poison arrows at the superhero and a third at her dog. Supergirl survives, but Krypto only has a few days to live — unless she can track down Krem and get the antidote. Thus begins an intergalactic epic journey of revenge that pushes its protagonist far beyond her limits.
Based on this latest trailer, Supergirl (the movie) seems to be following a very similar plot. Supergirl (Milly Alcock) meets Ruthye (Eve Ridley), who wants revenge on Krem (Matthias Schoenaerts). Krem then shoots Krypto (with some sort of laser gun here, not a poison arrow), which motivates Supergirl to team up with Ruthye on her mission of vengeance. That means we're going to experience the live-action version of this brutal comic book moment.
Image: DC ComicsThe rest of the trailer mostly follows from there, offering a preview of what we can expect on Supergirl's journey — mostly space pirates and Lobo, who notably isn't in the original comic. While Woman of Tomorrow becomes a bit of a road trip through the stars as its hero travels between planets and experiences adventures along the way, the movie seems more contained to a few specific locations. Or at least that's what this trailer suggests.
It's possible the actual Supergirl film could cover just as much ground as the comic. Either way, one thing we can be sure of is that one of the original story's most brutal moments is about to come to life in live action.
Supergirl releases in theaters on June 26, 2026.
