Square Enix has revealed plans to add a Gemini-powered AI chatbot to Dragon Quest 10, via a "Chatty Slime" who will engage with the player.
Dragon Quest 10 is a Japan-exclusive MMO and the only mainline entry in the franchise that has not received an English localization on any platform. A single-player version, known as Dragon Quest 10 Offline, was released back in 2022, but that is also still locked to Asia, with no English-language release.

Perhaps it's a blessing that Dragon Quest 10 isn't available in English, as it's about to become another game that's having AI forced into it for no reason. As reported by Sankei (via VGC), Square Enix has teamed up with Google to add a Gemini-powered AI chatbot to Dragon Quest.
Dragon Quest 10 Is Adding An AI Chatbot Companion
Image Via Square EnixThe intention is for Dragon Quest 10 to add a Chat Slime that takes the form of the series' iconic mascot. This creature is an AI chatbot that uses Gemini to engage with the player, even though it's an MMO intended to be played with other human beings.
The chatbot will analyze its surroundings to better communicate with the player and may even initiate conversations under certain circumstances. This mirrors a similar function in Where Winds Meet, where the player can chat with AI NPCs to create the illusion of interacting with another human being.
This creature is an AI chatbot that uses Gemini to engage with the player, even though it's an MMO intended to be played with other human beings.
There is a series precedent for this concept, as some previous Dragon Quest games had a "Party Chat" function, where the player could communicate with allies and hear their perspectives on current events. These were all scripted beforehand rather than automatically generated.
The inclusion of the AI chatbot slime feels like forced tech integration for its own sake. Is an AI chatbot really going to bring people to Dragon Quest 10? Does it serve a function in a game where a social element is already in play? It could potentially have a place in a single-player game, but surely fans would rather have well-written/voice-acted party members than a talking search engine?
