A new trilogy of Dragonlance novels is coming from Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, who created the beloved fantasy franchise in 1984. Dragonlance: War Wizard is the first book of the new series, which will be released under a new "classic Dragonlance" label. The novel is set during the Third Dragon War, a landmark event in the history of the world of Krynn, which precedes the War of the Lance that is the focus of the original Dragonlance trilogy, Chronicles.

The protagonists of Dragonlance: War Wizard will be Huma and Magius, two heroes of the Third Dragon War who played a fundamental role in repelling the evil goddess Takhisis, better known to Dungeons & Dragons fans as the Dragon Queen, Tiamat. Huma is the knight who defeated Takhisis in the final battle, forcing her to vow to leave Krynn forever — before she went back on her word centuries later, starting the War of the Lance. Magius is Huma's childhood friend, who was born as a magical prodigy in a nation that despises mages. War Wizard tells the story of how Magius endured persecution while striking an unlikely friendship with Huma, which will later shape the history of the world.

Weis and Hickman returned to the world of Krynn in 2022 with the Destinies trilogy, which has since concluded. That was a reason for celebration, as for over a decade the franchise had been stuck in a not-so-friendly deal between the creators and Wizards of the Coast, which led to the cancellation of a proposed trilogy of novels in 2020, before Weis and Hickman sued the company. Back in October 2025, the new head of D&D franchise Dan Ayoub announced the "return" of the two authors, who have worked out a new deal with the company.

Dragonlance was originally created as a setting for the Dungeons & Dragons game. For the first time, a set of novels would accompany the gaming products, and the success was undeniable. Dragonlance products, both D&D-related and novels, kept appearing for decades, building a passionate fandom and contributing to building what is now considered classic epic fantasy imagery.

War Wizard won't be the first time in recent history that Huma and Magius have appeared in a Dragonlance novel. In 2023's Dragons of Fate, the main character, Destina Rosethorn, traveled back in time and met the legendary heroes from Krynn's past. Now, Weis and Hickman are set to tell a story that seems more personal and character-focused, giving fans a good look at Huma and Magius's formative years.

Dragonlance: War Wizard is available for preorder now. The book will be released on Aug. 4.
