The cult-favorite survival horror series Fatal Frame returns next year when Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake launches for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on March 12, 2026. As the name implies, this is a remake of the original PS2 game with upgraded visuals, quality-of-life adjustments, and other tweaks one would expect from this era of remakes. Preorders for the game are now live, and grabbing the game early gets you a few in-game bonuses. Physical edition preorders are available for $50 from Amazon, GameStop, Target, and Walmart. Digital preorders are also available with the same perks, and there's a Digital Deluxe Edition that comes with even more bonuses going for $70--that is, unless you're on PC, in which case you can grab the Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake standard edition for just $42.49 (was $50) or the Deluxe Edition for $59.49 (was $70).

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake

$50 | Releases March 12, 2026

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is generally regarded as the best in the series and one of the best survival horror games. The remake aims to capture the same feel as the original, with updated visuals and audio design, quality-of-life gameplay improvements, and more.

Physical preordes are live at Amazon, Walmart, Target, and GameStop. The PS5 and Xbox Series X versions include the full game data on the disc, while the Switch 2 edition is a Game Key Card release. These do not contain the game data, and instead act as physical access keys to the digital version. This means that, despite coming in a physical box and cartridge, the full game still needs to be downloaded from the eShop--though you can lend or borrow Game Key Cards just like standard game carts. The game's download size has not been confirmed yet.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly follows twin sisters Mayu and Mio, who find themselves lost in an abandoned village teeming with the vengeful undead. Using the Camera Obscura, they'll fight for their lives and solve the mystery of what befell the small town. The Camera Obscura gameplay is completely redone from the ground up for a smoother, more modern experience. The biggest new gameplay addition is the ability for the sisters to hold hands, allowing them to stay closer together while exploring claustrophobic environments, which will feature updated sound design for added immersion.

The Fatal Frame series is no stranger to getting the HD treatment, with Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse finally getting a Western release on modern platforms back in 2023 after launching exclusively in Japan in 2008. If you'd like the experience this version of the first Fatal Frame before the Fatal Frame II remake, PC players can grab the game for as low as $42.25 (was $50) at Fanatical.
