Metroid Prime 4 How To Beat Carvex

Jake brings two decades of experience with him, having covered major industry events, breaking news, one-on-one interviews, and more.

When he's not playing World of Warcraft, he's usually on the hunt for good food and a refreshing beer to wash it down.

One of the hallmark features of the Metroid Prime series has always been its boss battles, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is no exception.

From its very first boss encounter, Metroid Prime 4 does an excellent job of sticking to the gameplay formula of the Metroid Prime franchise by delivering an excellent combination of FPS gameplay and creative boss encounters that Metroidvanias are known for.

The first boss you'll encounter in Metroid Prime 4 is Carvex, and yes, he looks a little similar to Flaahgra. That's where the similarities end, though, as the key to victory in this encounter is using one of the brand new abilities introduced in Metroid Prime 4.

Our guide on how to defeat Carvex will cover its abilities and the strategy you need to come out on top.

If you're looking to 100% Metroid Prime 4, make sure you scan Carvex before you defeat it! You'll need to scan a total of three parts for 100% completion.

While Carvex has some attacks, there are no really defined abilities beyond standard ones. Still, it's important to know what it's capable of, so you're aware of what to expect and how to deal with what's thrown at you.

How To Deal With It

How To Defeat Carvex

When you first enter the room, you'll see a giant flower pod that spawns a single tentacle. It's boss time. Make sure you scan Carvex, and let's get to it.

You'll notice what appears to be a weak spot near the tip of the tentacle that's protected by armor. Shoot away the armor to expose the weak spot, allowing you to shoot said weak spot down. Once you damage the tentacle fully, Carvex's flower pod armor will disappear, exposing its body.

As you dodge the thorn attacks, it's time to deal damage to its body to reduce its health.

Missiles will do the most damage, and you can refill your missiles by eliminating the drones that are flying at you.

After a short while, the flower pod armor will regrow, and Carvex will now have two tentacles you need to deal with. Remove the armor and then shoot the weak spots to kill the tentacle. It's important that you kill them one after another; otherwise, a tentacle will respawn.

Metroid Prime 4 Carvex Control Beam

You can try being super quick with this, or you can use the Control Beam from the Psychic Visor to slow time and have the beam kill the two tentacles, exposing Carvex's body.

From here, you do damage as before until the flower pod armor returns. Now you're dealing with three tentacles. Repeat the same process as before, keeping in mind that there's going to be a lot more to dodge this time around. Finally, once Carvex has 25% health left, it's time for the grand finale.

Metroid Prime 4 Carvex roots

Not only does the flower pod armor return, along with three tentacles, but Carvex will also spawn roots designed to absorb damage from the Control Beam. Remove the armor from the tentacle weak spot, then take a deep breath, relax, and control the control beam to move around the roots and eliminate the tentacles all at once.

If you've exposed its body for the fourth time, shoot it down to finish off Carvex, defeat the boss, and enjoy your rewards.
