Shane Limbaugh (He/Him) is a Contributor from the US. While he hasn't been writing about games for very long he has certainly been playing them. His degree in Game Design and Criticism let him better understand the fundamentals of the industry and the games themselves. There aren't many games he hasn't at least put hands on thanks to his time working at GameStop.

Esoteric Ebb isn't just a CRPG with a couple of ways to do things. It seems like everything in the game is accessible through one means or another. This offers some great freedom, but can also lead to some confusing quests where you'll feel a little lost.

Finding the path to the Undercoast is one of these quests. You can find it after doing some specific things in a specific order or having a specific build, which makes it a bit harder overall. Regardless, you'll need to figure this out to progress the main story quest.

This guide will run through the options you have, and if neither of them works out, there is a sort of failsafe built into the game for you. Hopefully, by following the specific instructions below, you'll be able to work everything out without needing the failsafe.

Finding the Entrance to the Undercoast

You'll need to make sure you get into the City Below one way or another if you're hoping to find the entrance you need. Once you're down there, you can do some exploring, but if you're looking for this entrance right now, you can find it at the end of the booby-trapped hallway in the northern part of the City Below.

Before you head that way, you may want to stop off and talk to Azkel so you can actually find the door if you aren't running a Wisdom build Cleric. While you technically don't have to talk to Akzel to do this, it'll be more helpful if you start with him. He'll be the first way we cover in finding the entrance to the Undercoast.

Doing Akzel's Quest

If you head to the north of the City Below, you'll come across an open area where a dwarf is currently mining some rocks. You can get into the blocked-off area by going towards the little shrine in the back and using the step on the right of the shrine.

Once you talk to him, he'll tell you he's searching for another ruin, but the HWBT won't let him do any sort of dungeoneering in that area. You'll want to head south towards the Roots, where you can talk to Moongrove about it, or you can head straight through the tunnel with the Beware Monsters sign.

This can be a great opportunity to find Meek since you'll head through all the same areas for the most part.

Follow the path all the way to the intersection. If you're careful, you can head towards the left path and avoid the Roper while you head to the other ruins. Interact with the mosaic there to get the answer for Azkel, and then just head back to him the way you came.

He'll give you a pickaxe that you can pull the Detect Magic spell out of. It'll be pretty easy to remove the spell, so once you've done that, you can head back over to the booby-trapped hallway and use the spell once you've prepared it.

The Wisdom Build Cleric

This one will take a lot longer since you'll need to go around and gather items to raise your wisdom enough to find the door. You'll probably want to do some leveling anyway, since the Undercoast is no joke.

There are plenty of pieces of gear you can find around the world to get your wisdom above 21, but here's what I used to push it over the top:

  • Key to Nowhere — +2 Wisdom
  • Hex Weekly — +2 Wisdom
  • Incense Bowl — +1 Wisdom
  • Spectral Halberd — +2 Wisdom

If you need more wisdom than that, you can always put your level-up point into wisdom. Outside of that, your best bet is to use the other method if you can't get your wisdom up high enough.

If you can't do either option, then on the fourth day, there will be a ghost outside the door that lets you in.

Once you manage to do either of these methods, the door will be findable, and you can open it. Just be careful because once you open it, you'll immediately be attacked by the Masked Assassin. The fight can be pretty tough, so make sure you're prepared.

This indie game offers all kinds of ways to do everything. Whether it's getting into the Tea Shop or the Pillar of Jor, you'll always have a few options on how you complete your quests.
