As a Vault Hunter, you can respec in Borderlands 4, which means there’s a system in the game that allows you to refund all the skill points you've spent and try new combinations.
Since there are many skills to unlock and builds to try in Borderlands 4, fretting over picking the wrong skills is a natural feeling. By choosing skills that don’t synergize with each other, you directly limit your character’s potential. Although having good guns is important in the world of Kairos, you can do much more with the right skills.
Below, learn how to respec in Borderlands 4 plus details about all the locations you can respec at that we've found so far.
Update (March 27): We added the location of the respec machine in the Whispering Glacier.
How to respec in Borderlands 4
You unlock the respec machine in Borderlands 4 by progressing in the main story mission “Down and Outbound,” which you receive after completing the “Recruitment Drive” quest. The machines are indicated by the three-arrow triangle icons on the map.
Image: 2K Games/Gearbox Software via PolygonTo use the respec machine, you need to pay a price and the amount scales depending on your level. In our case, at level 29, we had to pay $38,519 to respec. Once you enter the Respec Points menu, you can see all of your character’s Action Skills and skill trees.
You can refund and reallocate skill points as many times as you want without spending another penny. However, you have to pay every time you use the machine. If you want to respec your Specialization Points, you still use the same machine, but must use Eridium, a special currency to access it.

All Borderlands 4 respec machine locations
Here are all the locations we've identified so far where you can find respec machines in Borderlands 4.
- The Launchpad
- Carcadia
- Belton's Bore
- Bones of Sanctuary
- The Lockaway
- The Sumpview
- The Food Court
- The Speakeasy (DLC)
Below, we'll explain how to reach all of these respec machines.
The Launchpad
From the teleporter, climb the stairs and leave the building to your left. Turn left again and you'll see the building with the two vending machines. Use the door on the east side to find the respect machine beside the Golden Chest.

You find the respec machine inside the main hall where all the other systems, like vending machines and the bank, are located. To find the machine, enter the building and go to your right.

You find the respec machine in Belton's Bore towards the south, right beside where you appear, making this a quick trip to refund your skills.

In Bones of Sanctuary, the respec machine is in the outside area, east of the teleporter. This is also a solid place to choose if you want to reach the machine quickly.

Just as with Belton's Bore, The Lockaway is one of the best places to go if you want to quickly change your character's build. From the teleporter, go northeast to find it beside the large open door.

Although you can only unlock the Safehouse where this respec machine is located later in the game after The Lockaway, it’s still a solid place to quickly access the respec menu. You find it southeast from the teleporter.

Like the other two respec machines in the District areas, The Food Court one is also a good option if you don't have to spend too much time traversing the area after teleporting just to reach the respec machine. Once you’re in the Food Court area, head Northwest to find the machine.

This respec machine is located in the Whispering Glacier zone, which is available to players with access to the "Mad Ellie and the Vault of the Damned" DLC. During the "On Icebound Shores Abandoned" main quest, you'll unlock the door to the Speakeasy, another dimensional location that resembles a cafeteria. You find the respec machine on the east side of the first floor.
