In that time, he's gained knowledge and experience of not only how to be a thorough and competent journalist, but also the in's and out's of how gaming works as an industry at large. He has the type of insight that only comes with a seasoned career.
Humans have had a penchant for puzzle solving for most of our existence. Whether it’s sudoku, crosswords, or escape rooms, we love to solve problems. And man, does it feel great when you finally get to have that a-ha moment. It would stand to reason that as games entered the digital era we would see puzzle video games. Sure enough, they’ve been around since the very beginning.

10 Best Cozy Puzzle Games
Puzzles can be a real mental workout, but not all puzzle games need to be stressful!
Every generation of video game home consoles has had at least one standout puzzle video game, if not more. But some games have had an impact well beyond their life expectancy and continue to be legendary to this day. There’s a rich history to look back on here, so let’s dive into the puzzle games that have been GOAT’ed over the home console era’s many generations.

Haunted House

Puzzle |
The Magnavox Odyssey was an early console, somewhat between a video game and a board game. Haunted House was one of a handful of games for the first-gen console that had you place an overlay of said house onto a light-up board. One player took on the role of a detective going room to room trying to find clue cards while the other player was a ghost trying to catch them before they could solve the mystery.
The Odyssey didn’t really function that well, but if you managed to get a game of Haunted House going, and it worked, you were bound to have a good time. It’s a puzzle game that helped launch the genre into a digital era.

Maze Craze: A Game of Cops N’ Robbers

Puzzle |
Released on the Atari 2600 way back in 1980, Maze Craze pits 2 players against each other, one the cop, the other the robber. Each would have to try and escape a randomly generated top-down maze before the other player could. Parts of the maze would only be visible for moments at a time and there were AI enemies looking to take you out as well, adding to the overall challenge.
While rudimentary by today’s standards, you can see how the pressure of trying to navigate a perplexing maze you’ve never seen before faster than another person could be intense. Especially in a time when video games were still a new concept.

Tetris
The story of how Tetris came to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest puzzle game of all time is so amazing that they made a movie out of it. Beyond its origins, that game itself is just as amazing. Who knew moving tetrominoes all over the place to build lines could end up being so addictive?
While Tetris is mostly associated with NIntendo’s Game Boy, it was also released for the NES and that version has become popular with a new generation of gamers. In fact, in 2024, at just 15 years old, Alex Thach broke the world record high score.

The Lost Vikings
There’s never really been another puzzle game series quite like The Lost Vikings. You take on the role of three Vikings, each with their own unique skill, who’ve been kidnapped by aliens. The clever and unique mechanic of having to swap between all three in order to get through each area’s puzzle helped make it stand out on the 16-bit SNES and Sega Genesis.
I’ve never seen another title that really does what The Lost Viking did all so many years ago outside of maybe Trine, but it’s not the same experience. If you’re looking for a classic puzzle game, and you’ve never given it a try, I’d highly recommend it.

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo
No one loves mixing up their franchises in fun, creative new ways more than Capcom and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo is an excellent example of that. The game put characters like Street Fighter’s Ryu up against Darkstalker’s Donovan in a heated battle of matching colored gems, breaking them, then dumping them on your opponent. It was a clever and nuanced puzzle game that added a competitive angle.
Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo still stands out to me as one of the greatest puzzle video games ever made. I often find myself challenging friends to a few rounds if we’re hanging out and feeling nostalgic.
4 6th Gen
Ico
One of the most artistic games on this list has to be Ico. While the game itself is very light on dialog, it used its eerie environments and visual cues to tell an emotional tale with a very heavy ending. The way the strange horned boy, Ico, and the princess would work together to solve environmental puzzles and walk hand-in-hand added gravitas to your adventure.
To this day, it’s often thought of as a true cult classic of the PS2 era. It’s also another amazing one-of-a-kind title that’s worth experiencing if you’re a fan of interactive puzzle games.
3 7th Gen
Portal 2
This game is a triumph. It took everything that made the first Portal game a huge success and added even more deliciousness. Beyond the wonder of using portals to do all sorts of science, the atmosphere is nothing short of perfection. The sadistic, dulcet tones of GlaDOS were joined by Stephen Merchant and J. K. Simmons as Wheatley and Cave Johnson respectively, which made for even more comical interactions.
The actual physics-based portal puzzles themselves were also clever and engaging without driving me crazy too often. Throw in the bonus of having a two-player co-op mode, and you’ve got one hell of an iconic puzzle title.
2 8th Gen
Tetris Effect
It may seem like a copout to have Tetris twice on this list, but hear me out: Tetris Effect’s producer, Tetsuya Mizuguchi, is obsessed with the concept of synesthesia and incorporated it into the gameplay. Every turn of a tetromino you make is accompanied by a physical vibration and an audio cue that syncs with the in-game music to create an ethereal experience beyond that of the standard Tetris. Playing can almost feel meditative.
The Tetris effect also happens to be a real phenomenon where you see the game’s shapes in your dreams. There aren’t really any other puzzle games that can haunt you in your sleep like that.
1 9th Gen
Blue Prince
While we’re still in the middle of this generation of home consoles and there have been a number of amazing puzzle games, Blue Prince has shown itself to be a breakout hit. Trying to find a hidden room in a mansion is a hard enough task, but when the layout of that mansion is never the same twice, well, good luck with that.
This first-person puzzle adventure is a never-ending labyrinth of twists and turns by deliberate design. And even though the game has technically been solved, there are a number of cryptic messages and glyphs that have yet to be figured out, making this a puzzle game with even more to do once you’ve beaten the main quest.
