It hasn’t even been 24 hours since God of War Laufey was officially announced, and its premise has already created one of the funniest fandom jokes the series has produced in its 21 years. We’ve only seen 20 minutes of footage of the upcoming PS5 game, but the reveal that Laufey will run parallel to the 2018 Norse-themed reboot has put a slightly comedic tone on some of the reflective scenes in both that game and its sequel, Ragnarok.
All things considered, 2018’s God of War is a pretty somber game. The strong, silent god of war Kratos isn’t much of a talker, and his son Atreus is so scared of him that he barely talks himself. But at several points, the pair grieves for Faye, as her death has pushed them on the journey they’ve undertaken to scatter her ashes on the mountains of Jötunheim. Throughout both games, they reflect on the promise they made to her before she passed, and it creates some truly lovely moments between the two where they are at least grateful that she can finally be at rest.
Well, in actuality, my girl is not resting at all. As revealed in God of War Laufey, Faye has ended up in a place called the Everywhen, where all gods and magical beings end up after their death. This afterlife isn’t peaceful, and Faye isn’t getting to chill out for the rest of eternity, laying back and being fed grapes. Instead, she’s met with new gods and monsters to fight. No rest for the magical. Faye’s goal in Laufey appears to be helping Kratos and Atreus from the beyond during the events of God of War and Ragnarok, and while that’s giving fans a lot to speculate about, it’s also opened a window for one of the funniest jokes in the fandom.
When the full game is out I want to see a hypercut video where every time Kratos & Atreus mourn for Laufey it then says "meanwhile" and cuts to her air juggling 5 demons to heavy metal music. pic.twitter.com/NRhT2q9wD7

This is normally where I’d say “Faye is fighting for her life in these streets,” but she’s dead, so she’s fighting for the lives of her husband and son. Though these players have made a very funny connection between the games, I am genuinely curious to see how Laufey fills in the gaps in Kratos and Atreus’ journeys, and how it all wraps up in the end. Faye doesn’t reunite with her husband and son through any magical shenanigans at the end of Ragnarok, and I do think there’s an argument to be made that if she does so in Laufey it would undermine a lot of what came before, so hopefully Santa Monica Studio isn’t planning on ending with a big, happy family reunion or anything. We’ll have to wait for the game’s eventual PS5 launch to find out.
