At 12,060 pieces, the Sagrada Família Architecture set dwarfs Lego's The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith build
Photo: The Lego GroupClear some shelf space, Lego fans. On Thursday, The Lego Company revealed its biggest set ever: the Lego Architecture Sagrada Família, a 12,060-piece build that outpaces the previous record-holder by more than 1,000 pieces. It will make Lego's recently revealed The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith - 25th Anniversary Legacy Collection set seem Gimli-sized in comparison.
Coming soon as part of Lego's Architecture line, the Sagrada Família set recreates Barcelona’s iconic landmark in plastic brick form. The set's building instructions mirror the basilica’s actual construction sequence, The Lego Company says in a news release: "The build begins with the foundational Apse and Crypt, moves through [architect Antoni] Gaudí’s original Nativity façade and the dramatic Passion façade, before rising into the grand naves, Western Sacristy and six iconic towers. The final stage brings the model together with the Eastern Sacristy and the Glory façade."
Lego's designers seem particularly proud of the Lego Architecture Sagrada Família set's stained-glass window effect, and they're right to brag. Look!
Photo: The Lego Group"We felt an immense responsibility to do justice to the Sagrada Família through this design," said Rok Žgalin Kobe, Lego Architecture designer. "Our goal was to honour Gaudí’s vision with the utmost respect, capturing the rhythm of the basilica’s construction, its extraordinary complexity and ambition, and translating that into an immersive building experience. This is not only the largest Lego set ever, but a model of one of the most ambitious architectural works in the world. Balancing scale and precision, while remaining faithful to a living monument that has been evolving for more than a century, was a unique design challenge – and one we’re incredibly proud of."
Given the piece count and ambition of Lego Architecture Sagrada Família, try not to be surprised by the price: The set retails for $799.99. Pre-orders for the set go live on June 4, with an expected ship date of Nov. 1.
By piece count, Lego's previous record holder for largest set was the Lego Art World Map, which was composed of 11,695 bricks. Other big builds include the Lego Icons Eiffel Tower (10,001 pieces), Lego Icons Titanic (9,090 pieces), and the Lego Coliseum (9,036 pieces). Those real-world recreations are bigger than the hefty licensed stuff, like the 8,278-piece The Lord of the Rings: Minas Tirith and the 9,023-piece Lego Star Wars Death Star. The latter is the largest Lego set in terms of dimensions, standing 25.5 inches (70 cm) tall and 31 inches (79 cm) wide.
