Insomniac Games confirms they are still actively working on Marvel's Wolverine.

Positioned as one of PlayStation 5's biggest flagship exclusives for the year, the highly anticipated title didn't hold back, giving fans a raw look at Logan in action, and also has some good news for players eager for pre-orders.

Today's PlayStation State of Play packed in a full seven minutes of Insomniac's next blockbuster, giving us the biggest look at Wolverine's gameplay and, most importantly, its gruesome combat visuals.

Fast-Paced Combat Meets a Vibrant Art Direction

Marvels Wolverine First Gameplay Is As Bloody and Violent As Insomniac Can Get 2

Introduced by creative director Marcus Smith, the footage showcases several minutes of our beloved mutant's combat style, which looks remarkably fast, fluid, and relentlessly brutal.

Logan can be seen sinking his iconic adamantium claws into enemies without a shred of mercy. Naturally, this causes blood to splatter everywhere, visibly staining the protagonist's suit as the battle rages on. This makes the combat surprisingly violent for the studio, featuring crushed skulls, severed limbs, and raw finisher animations.

Interestingly, while the combat leans heavily into gore, the game’s environmental aesthetics don't quite follow that same dark and gritty trend. The scenery remains vibrant and colorful, contrasting with the sheer brutality of Wolverine’s strikes.

This visually striking approach feels deeply reminiscent of Insomniac's previous works, such as the Marvel’s Spider-Man series and even the classic Infamous franchise, suggesting that this blend of a high-contrast bloodbath and lively colors might just be the absolute peak of Insomniac's design philosophy.

The juxtaposition is to be expected given Insomniac's portfolio and signature style, but I can't help but feel the game suffers a little bit from the studio's success in establishing its style. This is a major departure from the more gritty and dark depictions of Wolverine in the Hugh Jackman era.

At the same time, it is a fairly great tribute to X-Men: The Animated Series, which ran throughout the 1990s. Despite airing on Fox Kids, it relied on much more mature teams than the average cartoon you'd see airing in the afternoon.

Marvel's Wolverine is the headliner, but what else does Sony have in store for 2026?

Beyond the visuals, the core gameplay loop looks fun and the narrative quite engaging! Smith explained that the title will feature a heavy narrative focus, centering on Logan as he travels the globe to protect various mutants who are being hunted by humans out of pure prejudice, a premise that sounds exciting in terms of world-building and narrative stakes.

On top of that, the trailer confirmed that players will cross paths with other iconic Marvel characters throughout the journey, including Jean Grey, Sabretooth, and Mystique. You can check out the full gameplay reveal trailer below:

To cap things off, Insomniac also announced that pre-orders for the game are officially going live later today, just in case the gory gameplay managed to spike your hype levels. Marvel’s Wolverine is officially set to launch exclusively for the PlayStation 5 on September 15, 2026.
