The June 2026 Sony State of Play concluded with the reveal of a brand-new God of War game, one with a new protagonist, though she may as well stay home, as the true star of the show is Phranque, a sentient cube who fights alongside her.
The God of War series originally focused on Kratos fighting alone, as he slaughtered his way through the Greek Gods and their servants. The new series that started on the PlayStation 4 introduced Kratos' son, Atreus, who he is raising alone, following the death of his mother. Atreus was still a boy, but he could aid Kratos in combat using his bow.
The God of War series is going in a new direction, as the final announcement of the June 2026 Sony State of Play was for God of War Laufey, starring Faye, Kratos' deceased wife. While Faye kicks as much ass as her husband, it's her sidekick that's stolen the hearts of fans, despite the fact that he lacks a face.
God Of War Laufey Is Phranque's Game
Image Via SonyIn the God of War Laufey trailer, Faye is shown in the "Everywhen", which is the afterlife of the gods of mythology. She's quickly captured and taken by Sekhmet, the Egyptian Goddess of War, and thrown into a cell. Fortunately, Faye is placed in a cell next to a talkative gelatinous cube, with a sword sticking out of it, with a sentient ribbon, named Rue.
The cube is named Phranque, and while he initially is just holding a magic sword that Faye can pull out, he's actually an amazing warrior, fighting alongside her. Faye is played by Deborah Ann Woll, reprising the role from the previous games, and it's sad to see her being outdone by a blob, considering she's a tremendous actress. The incredible charisma of Phranque, played by Jack Quaid, however, cannot be denied.
While Faye kicks as much ass as her husband, it's her sidekick that's stolen the hearts of fans, despite the fact that he lacks a face.
The trailer might make it seem like Phranque is a minor character, someone who only shows up for one scene before vanishing from the story, but no, he's on the game's cover art. That's top billing right there, especially for a sentient blob of goo, the kind that most Dungeons & Dragons adventuring parties would steamroll in a single combat encounter.
So, what is it about Phranque that makes him so awesome? Well, the fact that he's fighting on the same tier as Faye, who the game's casting videos describe as Kratos' equal in combat. Sure, Kratos and Faye might be handy with a blade, but can they squeeze through a one-inch gap? Phranque's the guy who gets called for sneaking missions.
It's not as if slime hasn't been popular in video games before. The Dragon Quest Slimes are the franchise's mascot, starring in their own spin-off games. Meanwhile, the Pokémon franchise has several high-profile slime monsters, with Grimer and Muk being among the classic original 151.
It's just a shame that Phranque has such a silly spelling for his name. Sure, it's the developers trying to make him sound ye-olden, but to reference Dungeons & Dragons again, it's like when players want a regular name, but tart it up with Shakespeare spelling.
It's a shame that Phranque's incredible stage presence has taken the focus away from God of War Laufey, as the trailer was a great one to end the Sony State of Play. At least it gave the show something memorable to close on, considering how tepid the rest of it was. Poor Phranque is going to be carrying God of War on his slimy shoulders, while future State of Play YouTube comment sections will be begging for a taste of the slime.
