New Halo Game Announced for This Year, But It Might Not Be What You Expect

The ongoing conversation surrounding the future of Xbox’s most iconic franchise has been keeping the gaming community on the edge of its seat for quite some time now, especially since the last mainline entry was released five years ago, when Halo Infinite landed on Xbox Series X|S and PC.

And let’s be completely honest for a sec: whenever the words “new Halo game” are uttered, our minds immediately race toward more first-person shooter action, huge cinematic space operas, and intense multiplayer matches.

However, it seems that the development teams behind Master Chief’s universe love to catch everyone completely off guard. That’s because a brand-new project has officially been locked in for a 2026 release window, but before you start dusting off your controllers and checking your digital pre-orders, you might want to brace yourself, because this upcoming adventure isn't exactly what you are expecting.

A Packed Year For Master Chief

Instead of a new digital entry or a mainline shooter, Halo Studios and the miniature gaming experts at Mantic Games have joined forces to announce Halo: Campaign Evolved – The Board Game. Yes, you read that right! Master Chief is making a leap from your television screen straight onto your tabletop with a fully cooperative experience.

For some fans, the idea of translating a frantic, fast-paced FPS into a physical board game might seem a bit unusual, but the creative minds behind it know exactly what they are doing. This tabletop project is designed specifically for one or two players, aiming to carefully recreate the iconic single-player campaign of the original 2001 classic, Halo: Combat Evolved – just as its title implies.

“[It is] an action-packed board game built around Master Chief's iconic adventure,” the official announcement reads. This basically means that the final product will feature objective-based missions that perfectly mirror the narrative we all fell in love with decades ago.

Also, according to the developers, Halo: Campaign Evolved – The Board Game is scheduled for a global release in Q4 2026, which spans the final months of the year, from October through December. Additionally, the tabletop experience has been given a recommended age rating of ages 13+, meaning it will pack just enough strategic depth to keep both teens and older fans thoroughly engaged.

Even though official details are relatively brief at the moment, we can already speculate on what to expect from this tabletop game, since Mantic Games is a seasoned specialist already familiar with the franchise, having launched the competitive miniature game Halo: Flashpoint back in 2024. For that previous project, they delivered detailed miniatures and streamlined rules – so my educated guess is that we will see a double down on that quality approach based on the descriptions released so far.

To make things even more interesting, the long-term road ahead for Halo fans is looking packed. Before this physical board game lands on store shelves in just a few months, players will actually get to experience the highly anticipated digital remake, Halo: Campaign Evolved, which is currently scheduled to arrive on July 28 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Either way, we won’t have to wait long to get our hands on both!
