Nintendo announces new Nintendo Direct for January 2026

One of the most anticipated Switch games is getting a dedicated Direct

Just days after it dropped a Nintendo Direct about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo announced another dedicated showcase: A new Nintendo Direct is coming on Thursday, Jan. 29, featuring the highly anticipated Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream.

Thursday's Nintendo Direct will stream live on Nintendo's YouTube and Twitch channels, starting at 6 a.m. PST/9 a.m. EST, and will focus exclusively on Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream. The presentation will run roughly 20 minutes, Nintendo says.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream was announced in March 2025 at a Nintendo Direct focused on games still coming to the original Switch. The sequel to 2014's Tomodachi Life for Nintendo 3DS promises to provide Nintendo fans a very different style of island life simulation, in which players' quirky Mii characters live their daily lives and occasionally get a little weird.

Here's Nintendo's official description of Living the Dream:

On a small island floating in the sea, Mii characters live their own carefree lives. You’re in charge of this island, so create anyone you’d like to live here as Mii characters, like ones based on friends, family and even yourself! Then, choose their personality and voice, and help your Mii characters enjoy their island life however they see fit. You can see what’s on their minds, help them solve problems, watch them interact, cultivate their friendships and more.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is slated for a spring 2026 release, but it's likely that Nintendo will provide a release date for the game later this week. Since the next Tomodachi Life is currently only announced for the original Switch, there may also be news about a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.
