A new era of Patlabor is on the way

We’ve reported that a new Patlabor trilogy of films is on the way, and now the franchise’s social media account has announced the dates for the upcoming installments alongside a new trailer.

The trailer for Patlabor EZY showcases footage from the original Patlabor anime from 1988 before jumping to the present time and featuring the series’ new look. The character designs are freshened up for modern day while still keeping some semblance to their original designs, but the actual mecha themselves are rendered in 3D CG. Despite that, the animation looks quite good: CG vehicles on 2D backgrounds look natural, and the movements of the mecha look seamless. The trailer showcases a few action moments, including a Labor mecha going against a mechanical snowman with a deadly-looking grip arm.

Patlabor EZY will consist of three parts; the first will be released on May 15, while the second is slated to arrive on Aug. 14. The final installment will come next year in March. It will also be released as an eight-episode OVA.

Originally created by the Headgear anime and manga staff collective, Patlabor is a unique mecha series about a group of overworked cops in a near-future Tokyo, where giant robots called Labors are just another form of heavy machinery. Patalbor focuses on an underfunded police unit who battle malfunctioning Labors while working around their own notoriously unreliable mecha. It's a workplace comedy as much as it's a mecha series, and that's probably what still makes its premise standout among most other franchises of its ilk.

Patlabor EZY is directed by Yutaka Izubuchi, at animation studio J.C. Staff and features scripts and series composition by screenwriter Kazunori Ito. CG direction is handled by Yasutomo Moriizumi, with music by Kenji Kawai, and CG production by Gazen. Overall production comes via the anime production enterprise Genco.
