Red Dead Redemption 2 Players Find More Carved Symbols Following Recent Spider Mystery

Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

Recently, the passionate Red Dead Redemption 2 community has been awakened once again by a fresh mystery surfacing across the western frontier.

It all began with the discovery of some specific spider webs and pole carvings scattered across the map. Something apparently harmless at first, but players quickly found it incredibly strange to encounter the exact same patterns in different locations. This was when they overlaid all the web locations on the map, and were stunned to find they formed the distinct shape of a spider.

This discovery acted as a catalyst, sending thousands of players back into Rockstar Games’ Old West to unravel the new, unexpected secret seven years after the game’s original release. However, the trail seemingly hit a dead end when the clues led to a site known as “Dodd’s Bluff,” located west of Fort Wallace, where the lead went cold.

But for the most dedicated hunters and cowboys, the investigation never truly stopped – and it seems that their persistence has finally paid off with the discovery of brand-new symbols.

The New Valentine Heart Connection Theory in RDR2

Once again, the prominent YouTuber The Strange Man, known for his deep dives into Red Dead Redemption 2 lore and fan theories, has come to the rescue! That’s because he was responsible for this latest breakthrough, which adds another layer to the ongoing enigma.

According to his findings, several "Valentine hearts" carved into trees have been located in different locations on the map, and much like the previous spider web and pole carving patterns, these don’t look like random decorations.

When these heart symbols are plotted on the map, they actually point directly toward a location that is called – guess what – Valentine. This was enough to convince fans that this is no mere coincidence and likely shares a deep connection with the previous spider mystery.

And even The Strange Man strongly believes and supports the theory that these hearts are linked not only to the spider webs but also to other cryptic symbols found previously, such as pentagrams, the Fort Wallace guitars, and various bird carvings. His suggestion is that we are looking at a much larger mystery than initially anticipated – one that, when fully mapped out, might form a complex cipher puzzle for the community to solve.

“A heart etched on a bridge has been found near Fort Wallace”, says the video description. “From pentagram and outhouse tally marks, webs and telegraph poles, to Fort Wallace guitars and bird carvings, and now heart symbols, let's take a look at our another clue”.

While this might sound like a crazy idea to some, if my past 20 years playing Rockstar Games titles have taught me anything, it is that this studio is simply a master at creating mysteries that bring the entire community together to search for answers. I mean, they are literally doing that right now, even seven years after the launch of Red Dead Redemption 2! Fans are desperately exploring every inch of the map for leads to piece this story together.

And, for me, this is the most magical part of the entire Red Dead experience. Sure, Arthur Morgan’s story is a masterpiece, and the world-building is second to none, but nothing beats the thrill of solving a near-impossible puzzle with the help of strangers on the internet (who may become friends!). In a way, it mirrors the journeys of Arthur and John Marston themselves, forming bonds with strangers in a vast, unpredictable world, right?

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, so you can head out and investigate the Valentine heart mystery for yourself right now. Oh, and you can check out the full story on the spider webs’ mystery in this article.
