Someone needs to fix a pipe at Marvel, because just a couple of days after the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday leaked onto the internet, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s is out in the wild. After a fashion—it is the most astonishingly poor quality. It’s so difficult to see, in fact, that it likely would have been dismissed as a fake, had Marvel and Sony not issued copyright strikes against every upload and wiped it from the internet.
It was only Monday 15th when Avengers: Doomsday‘s trailer escaped into the wild in shitty quality, ahead of its official attachment to Avatar: Fire and Ash, due to hit theaters this weekend. (It will apparently have four different versions, designed to encourage people to see Fire and Ash multiple times to watch them all. Which is…it’s a choice.) Now, a couple of days later, Spidey’s next adventure has followed suit.
Brand New Day is due to reach screens on July 31, 2026, picking up from where 2021’s No Way Home left off, with Peter having had to sacrifice all his friendships and relationships to protect the multiverse. Erased from his friends’ minds and lives, and then off our screens for five years, it’s been a brutal wait to find out how the situation resolves.
The leaked trailer is stunningly poor quality, and in the only version I’ve been able to find the result of someone filming a laptop screen with their phone, but seemingly without ever looking to see if it’s in frame, all while someone slams doors in the background. But, despite this, the audio is there and at least confirms something about Sadie Sink’s mysterious role in the movie. Look away now if you’re avoiding even teaser trailer spoilers. (And no, it’s not this video.)
It seems she’s a baddie. We still don’t know which one, and Sony is working hard to keep it a secret, but popular opinion is leading toward Shathra. From the Astral Plane (which is showing up more and more in recent Marvel outings), Shathra is known as the Spider-Wasp, and in the comics shape-shifted into a human called Sharon Keller, who abused her knowledge of Spider-Man’s identity. And in the alleged trailer, we hear Sadie Sink saying, “You’re a mess, Spider-Man. Don’t get in my way—or else it won’t just be your friends who don’t remem–” So, you know, she doesn’t seem friendly. She’s certainly not Gwen Stacy, anyway.
The bulk of the leaked clip has a voiceover of Peter Parker seemingly introducing himself to someone, explaining that they don’t remember him and why, and adding, “I’m not just Peter Parker, I’m…Spider-Man.” There’s lots of speculation over whether he’s talking to MJ or Ned, or perhaps reading the letter he never gave MJ, but from the unnatural delivery I’m pretty certain this is intended to be voiceover in the movie too. I think, most likely, designed to address the audience itself (even if it is his reading MJ’s letter), given we too should technically have forgotten who he is. It’s a neat way to catch everyone up after a five-year gap.
Now, here’s where it gets a bit more confusing. Obviously the video is getting struck down wherever it pops up, but the version I’ve seen and the one multiple other people have commented on cuts off at this point. However, other sites are reporting that there’s more out there, including a moment of Parker speaking to Frank “Punisher” Castle, as well as Bruce Banner, and some saying Kingpin. It’s known that both Banner and Castle are in the movie, alongside Daredevil, but I cannot verify this portion of the leak, and don’t know if this is a case of sites over-confidently copying one another based on a dubious source, or if I’ve failed to find the full version. Or perhaps others are able to discern more detail from the gloomy soup of the footage than I?
Given Spider-Man: Brand New Day is due out five months ahead of next December’s Avengers: Doomsday, you would imagine the trailer is intended to be out soon enough. And clearly, given the amount of buzz surrounding these glimpses, the studios are going to work hard to ensure they’re used to get people to visit their movie theaters before they allow them to be shared online. But if you want to make sure that everyone knows a leak is for real, the fastest route is to have it copyright struck from existence.
