Peakychu, the pale white Pikachu in Pokémon Pokopia, has been one of the biggest sparks of speculation leading up to the new life sim’s release. Her ghost-like features had fans wondering if she might be a dead or dying Pikachu, perhaps even one that had taken on a new ghost typing. Well, the game is out now, so we have a little bit of context for why Peakychu looks like this. If you want to know, read on.

According to her Pokédex entry, Peakychu used all her electricity helping out her sick friends during the terrible events leading up to Pokopia. Her physical structure changed as a result of her overusing her electric powers, and as such, she is unable to generate any more electricity. This is also why her tail has shrunken in size, as Pikachu tails are often used to receive electricity almost like a lightning rod, which is then stored in their cheeks. Oddly enough, Peakychu is still listed as an electric-type monster in the Pokédex. So it seems like this isn’t a new “form” similar to Rotom’s stereo transformation, making it unlikely we’ll get this variant in the mainline games. Given the whole premise is that Peakychu has exhausted its typical way of battling, she doesn’t seem like much of a combatant at this point, so that might be for the best.

Poor girl. Peakychu was such a kind spirit during a tough time for her friends, and that kindness has taken her electricity from her. At least she’s not a ghost, as many people speculated. Though now that I know what’s going on in this game, I’m feeling bad for every Pokémon I’m coming across. But that’s why we’re rebuilding in Pokopia, so all these poor critters have a place to live.
