The journey of the Baltic Battalion has been a perilous one. Broken Arrow's highly anticipated and equally delayed DLC has become the stuff of legends, with folk tales speaking of the battalion getting bogged down in the Čepkeliai marsh as it tried to make its way to the border positions.
Whatever the reasons for the delay, Baltic Battalion is finally here, and it is proving to be the breath of fresh air that Broken Arrow has been needing since it came out in June 2025.
Released as a free DLC, Baltic Battalion adds the home team to the battlefields around the Baltic countries of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.
Broken Arrow: Baltic Battalion New Units
The stars of this update are the 23 infantry units and 25 vehicles, which have new levels of nation-based customization.
To avoid interface bloat when prepping your army, Baltic Battalion lets you pick and choose the infantry types based on their nation, while still respecting the standard archetypes.
Estonia's mechanized infantry units have Spike-SR launchers, giving them organic ATGM capability at the expense of a higher cost per squad. Latvia's recon teams, meanwhile, are experts in urban warfare, much like Lithuania's Zaliukai special forces.
The biggest change in flavor is among Infiltrators. Estonia and Latvia have your usual small 2-3 man sniper team, but Lithuania rolls in with the KNT frogmen, with four operators quipped with the MP5SD suppressed submachine gun.
ATGM and MANPADS teams each use different models, with Estonia's Piorun-equipped gunners brandishing two launchers instead of one.
In the frontline vehicle department, the spotlight goes to the Leopard 2A8 main battle tank and the CV-9035 IFV. They are complemented by Lithuania's Vilka IFV (export version of the British Boxer), the XA-180 (Patria Pasi), the Mercedes G-Wagon with a heavy weapon turret, the ubiquitous M113, and the Type-X unmanned ground vehicle.
Artillery units include the M109A5Ö Paladin, the K9 Kõu, and PzH-2000 155mm howitzers, plus the M113 in 120mm mortar configuration.
Supplies can reach the frontline on the Finnish E13TP heavy truck, and the good old Mercedes Unimog 4x4 truck. The latter also serves as the platform for both ZU-23 anti-aircraft guns and Mistral anti-aircraft missile launchers.
For more advanced air defences, the Baltic Battalion adds the IRIS-T and NASAMS launchers. You can configure the NASAMS to fire AIM-9 infrared guided missiles, the standard AMRAAM, or the AMRAAM-ER with an added 800m of range in-game.
Baltic Battalion lets you pick and choose the infantry types based on their nation, while still respecting the standard archetypes.
In keeping with local military realities, the aerial units added are the most underwhelming. Fixed-wing aviation gets the C-27J Spartan tactical transport and the L-39 Albatros trainer, which can be fitted with short-range air-to-air missiles, rockets, and bombs.
The AS-365 Dauphin helicopter can carry either rockets, gunpods, or a mix of both, while the UH-60M Black Hawk only carries machine guns or grenade launchers for its door gunners.
While lacking in heavy equipment, the units in the Baltic Battalion DLC carry modern weapons and sensors. This is perfect for conducting asymmetric warfare against more numerous Russian units, taking advantage of the abundance of anti-tank weapons to make short work of incoming armor.
At the same time, the Leopard 2A8 optics considerably exceed those of the American M1A2 SEP v2, and the CV-90 makes the BMP family look like a tinker toy. As usual in any popular multiplayer game, the patch has invited a lot of (occasionally heated) discussions about balancing. While a polishing pass of the Russian faction is indeed due, Broken Arrow: Baltic Battalion brings some much-needed variety to what is shaping up to be the best modern warfare multiplayer RTS.
Broken Arrow is currently available for PC on Steam, with a 15% sale running until April 6th.
