Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

Twelve months is plenty of time to do a lot of things – travel to different places, meet new people, study a new language, and, of course, fall in love with a brand-new game. And that is exactly what The First Berserker: Khazan is celebrating today!

Luckily, not every game in the genre is brutally difficult, and there are some that can get you integrated with it more smoothly.

It has been exactly one year since Neople’s title launched and conquered the hearts of Soulslike fans everywhere (even through those moments that made us want to throw our controllers out the window, of course). Now, they want to celebrate that with the players, and also warn us all about the studio’s future.

A Relentless Quest for Vengeance (and Statistics)

To celebrate the 1st anniversary of The First Berserker: Khazan with the community, the developers revealed some unique data regarding what players have been up to during Khazan’s relentless quest for vengeance.

According to a special anniversary infographic, players have been defeated over 273 million times (specifically 273,804,045 lives lost), which is exactly what you would expect from a respectable Soulslike.

In a fun breakdown of those numbers, the three biggest causes of death (besides direct combat) are falling, status effects, and traps – and I definitely identify with death by falling, since it is a genre classic.

The infographic also revealed that the deadliest mobs are the Pincer Spider in first place, followed by the Lunatic Destroyer (I really hate that fella) and the Wild Bear. On the defensive side, the weapon types players used most to protect themselves were the Spear, Dual Wield, and Greatsword, which actually came as a bit of a surprise to me, considering that massive Greatswords are usually the most coveted choice in these types of experiences.

There are also some truly hilarious stats, such as 43 bosses being defeated by players using no weapons at all! So yes, that means they took on these fearsome foes with their bare hands. Sadly, Neople didn't reveal which bosses fell victim to these brutal fisticuffs or the IDs of the Berserkers who managed such a feat, but I’d love to find one of them just to ask, “But why?”

Amidst the celebration, the studio highlighted the game's success in its launch year and teased that "there is more to come." In an official statement, Creative Director Junho Lee thanked everyone who dared to face the challenge and promised that the team is working on something even better.

“Now, more than ever, we’re driven by a single heartfelt desire—to create something even better, something even more fun for all of you to enjoy,” Lee said. “Someday we’ll take on new challenges, but Khazan’s story is far from over.”

While he didn't give specific details on what exactly is on the way, I’m personally hoping for new content that guarantees another 273 million deaths for us fans! The First Berserker: Khazan is currently available for PC (via Steam), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
