Melissa Sarnowski has been a game writer for over two years. While she's willing to dig into any game for an article, she heavily focuses on The Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, and The Sims content, having played games from each franchise since she was a child.

Poppy Playtime is a mascot horror game, and a key feature of this genre is the depth of lore that's revealed as you progress through each section. So far, Poppy Playtime has five chapters, and each one digs deeper into the secrets of Playtime Co. Each time you feel you understand the lengths Playtime Co. employees were willing to go without complaining, and the next chapter somehow shows you that even worse events were happening at the factory.

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Ending, Explained

The last stretch of Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 is intense. Let's take a better look at what happened.

In the midst of the experiments and the way that Playtime Co. functioned, there are some details that stick with you. Some details are disturbing from the moment you find them. For other details, they might seem like they aren't a big deal at first, but the longer you think about it, the more disturbing they become.

Warning: This article contains content that readers might find disturbing, as well as spoilers for Poppy Playtime Chapter 5.

10 Playtime Co.'s Size

It Keeps Going Deeper

Poppy Playtime 5

Each chapter in Poppy Playtime takes place in a new section of the Playtime Co. factory. By the time you're in Chapter 5, you're quite deep underground, and there doesn't seem to be an end to the factory in sight. Then, you start to consider the logistics of the size and how that space has been allocated.

Most of the factory has been constructed for the purpose of conducting unethical and immoral experiments, which shows you how much planning went into these projects, and how many people were willing to simply follow orders and leave their morals behind for a paycheck.

9 Playcare

The Worst Orphanage to be In

Poppy Playtime Playcare

This detail doesn't try to hide how disturbing it is. You enter the Playcare during Chapter 3, finding that it's an orphanage run by Playtime Co. that functions like its own town. There's a home for the orphans, a playground, and even a school so that they can learn and live without ever leaving the location.

To an extent, the Playcare did function like an actual orphanage, and it seems that some children were adopted and managed to escape. Unfortunately, the majority of the orphans here likely became some of the many living toys you encounter beyond this point of the game, including the Prototype and CatNap.

8 Nanny Cams

Huggy Wuggy is Always Watching

This detail is easy to miss if you aren't reading notes that you find throughout the game. Early on, there are a series of notes that talk about an unsettling feeling that people had around Huggy Wuggy, which would lead to them reminding themselves that he's just a toy and not a living creature, and they turned out to be wrong about that.

You can actually find evidence that Huggy Wuggy has nanny cams in his eyes, meaning he's used for monitoring, which is likely a measure that most employees and visitors who aren't part of the dark side of Playtime Co. wouldn't suspect anymore than they suspect him to be living and capable of moving, even though they thought he moved and dismissed the idea as impossible.

7 Toy-led Experiments

The Hour of Joy Didn't End Everything

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Giblet

This detail is quite interesting, as you'd think that the experiments would stop when the toys revolted during the Hour of Joy. However, Chapter 5 includes information that lets you know that at least some level of experimentation continued after the Hour of Joy. The extent to which it happened remains unknown.

In some ways, the experiments could've been a punishment for some toys, as Poppy asks Giblet what happened to him, and it seems that he's not the only toy that got turned inside out by the Prototype. As for the reasons the Prototype continued experiments and if he had a goal or just wanted to punish other toys, that part isn't yet clear.

6 Leith Pierre

He Didn't Start the Experiments

Poppy Playtime Security Camera

The recordings and notes regarding Leith from the first four chapters gave the impression that he would be the mastermind behind the darker deeds of Playtime Co. Then, you can find a note in Chapter 5 that subverts that belief entirely. The start of the experimentation was Elliot Ludwig, and he did it in secret, which was unexpected given what you've been told about him genuinely caring about the children earlier.

Unfortunately, Leith didn't have a good enough heart to put a stop to the experiments after Elliot's death. Instead, he continued them by learning from the information Elliot left behind, and he likely ended up dying during the Hour of Joy along with the majority of employees present that day.

5 Bigger Bodies Initiative

The Purpose of Making Giant Living Toys

Poppy Playtime ch 5 Huggy Reunion

A lot of living toys are the standard size of toy, but there are notable examples of Playtime toys that are much larger than normal, which means they were part of the Bigger Bodies Initiative. From what's currently known about the program, the Bigger Bodies Initiative was meant to create toys that would be used to fulfill roles at Playtime Co. that weren't suited for humans.

The truth is likely that all the Bigger Body toys were designed as a type of security measure. This is definitely the case for Huggy Wuggy, considering his nanny cams and his appearance at the end of Chapter 4, with the job to keep you from going deeper into the factory. However, other roles—such as the one given to Mommy Long Legs—make less sense for the initiative being about security, as her job could've been done by a human, given what's known about her role.

4 Bad Toy Box

Ms. Gracie's Favorite Punishment

Poppy Playtime Bad Toy Box

When you see Huggy Wuggy's memories in Chapter 5, it's clear that the Bad Toy Box isn't a normal punishment. Instead, it's an extreme punishment that was likely used to condition Huggy so that he'd be able to act as security even against other toys by desensitizing him to enacting punishments.

If you listen to the memory, it's clear that the Bad Toy Box is basically a shredder. The toys being put in it aren't getting a time-out or any other type of punishment that might seem more reasonable. They're being killed.

3 Ms. Gracie

The Head of Playtime's Brainwashing

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Miss Gracie

Ms. Gracie first appears as the primary character in the videos you can see around the factory, where she reinforces that being a toy is great, and that the toys have always been toys, never human. She's called the lead counselor when it comes to her job, but the truth is that she's conditioning the children who have been turned into toys to accept their new lives.

It's clear later that the toys have no love for Ms. Gracie, and they instead hate her to a great extent for her role in killing toys for the sake of conditioning, as seen through Huggy's memories. As far as employees go, Ms. Gracie made the decision to become a brainwasher, and she didn't seem to care if she caused others to die as a result of her actions.

2 Poppy Gel

The Science of Becoming a Toy

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Put in Gel

Chapter 5 gives you a glimpse into the poppy gel that was used to make people into toys, but the actual mechanics of how it works are unclear at best, and creepy at worst. The importance of poppies is clear from the beginning, where you can find notes that record submerging subjects in a poppy-based solution. You learn enough early on to know that the stains you find on damaged toys are poppy gel, which acts as their blood.

Then, you find more information about the process of turning people into toys in Chapter 5, and the eeriest of that information is likely the way that the poppy gel is said to make biological pliable. The idea of human biology being pliable enough to turn a person into a toy is simply unsettling.

1 Factories

This isn't the Only Playtime Co. Factory

Poppy Playtime Factory Size

It's not shocking that a company like Playtime Co. would have multiple factories operating. Beyond the experiments, the world saw a toy company that produced and sold toys on a large scale, so naturally, space and resources were needed for that. However, it's possible that the factory you explore in-game isn't the only location where experimentation happened.

In Chapter 5, you're firmly in the areas of the factory that were dedicated to experiments rather than manufacturing normal toys. That's why it's disturbing that you can find a note in this chapter that mentions another factory in a different location being nearly operational. The news of a new factory's status has no reason to be in this section of the factory, unless the new factory is also going to perform experiments.

Poppy Playtime is meant to be unsettling and often disturbing, as you know from the start that you're entering a location meant to make toys, and that it has living toys still inside the now-closed factory. However, with how much darker the lore gets with each chapter, it leaves you wondering what new secrets will come in the eventual release of Poppy Playtime Chapter 6.
