A new movie starring The Powerpuff Girls is in production by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. The company made the announcement during its presentation at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, according to Discussing Film on X. No other details were shared at this time, and Polygon has reached out to Warner Bros. for more information.

The trio of Powerpuff Girls, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, debuted in 1998 with the animated series The Powerpuff Girls. It lasted six seasons on Cartoon Network, and the trio led an origin-story theatrical film in 2002, The Powerpuff Girls Movie.

The series has since been rebooted, but not successfully. A 2016 animated reboot (also called The Powerpuff Girls) was panned by critics and audiences alike, though it did get a three-season run. "But kids channels — all channels, frankly — can still do a better job of diversifying their casts and, better yet, their representations of men and women, boys and girls," Polygon's review of its early episodes read. "The Powerpuff Girls was one of the strongest examples of what gender diversity could look like in cartoons. It's a shame that in 2016, the new show bearing that name is a step backward, not forward."

The CW began development on a live-action reboot in 2020, but it was canceled in 2023 before even airing a pilot. It would have found the Powerpuff Girls in their 20s with their life of crimefighting behind them. They would have had to reunite to save the world again. A trailer for the live-action show leaked in 2025 and looked like a YouTube parody, so maybe it was for the best that the show never made it to air.

The newly announced The Powerpuff Girls film isn't the only reboot in the works. In 2022, another reboot was announced with the original creator of the franchise, Craig McCracken, on board, but there has been little word on it since.
