The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is dazzling, candy-coated chaos
Image: Illumination/NintendoThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie is aptly named. Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment’s previous Mario animated film, 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, is largely about brothers Mario and Luigi discovering a new home and finding purpose beyond plumbing, exhibiting a twinge of character growth along the way. The sequel is instead focused on expanding the Nintendo Cinematic Universe with a constellation of new characters (many of whom have too little to do in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie) and an emptiness that rivals outer space.
Much of what we said about The Super Mario Bros. Movie applies to its sequel. Just like its predecessor, Galaxy is stuffed with references to Mario games released over the past 40 years, and it relies on nostalgia and dazzling visuals to carry a paper-thin plot. The sequel is even less focused, yanking in references from across the Nintendo IP library to fill the gaps between story beats.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's post-credits opens up the Marioverse's next level
Image: Illumination, NintendoThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie marks a big leap forward for Nintendo and Illumination's animated Super Mario film franchise, as our heroes venture beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into the realm of deep space. But what comes next in the series may be even bigger, as the moviemakers hint at a further expanded scope for the Mario animated universe.

The Super Mario animated universe is growing, just don’t expect a Smash Bros movie any time soon, Shigeru Miyamoto says
Photo: Sami Drasin for Universal Pictures, Nintendo and IlluminationNintendo and Illumination’s new animated adventure The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a massive leap for the franchise. Mario, Peach, and Luigi venture far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom’s confines in the sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, rubbing elbows with a surprising array of Nintendo characters on their journey.
Some of those character cameos are expected: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie welcomes old-school Super Mario villains like Wart (a mostly forgotten bad guy from Super Mario Bros. 2) and ROB (the robot toy that was packaged with the original NES). Other cameos are more surprising, like the inclusion of Fox McCloud from the Star Fox games, a major crossover for Nintendo, the likes of which are typically only seen in the Super Smash Bros. games.

Donald Glover reveals how he landed the role of Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie
Image: Illumination, NintendoWhen Nintendo and Illumination revealed that actor-musician Donald Glover was stepping into the role of Yoshi for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, the consensus was that it was a surprisingly good and unexpected casting choice. While Chris Pratt voicing Mario was initially controversial and Jack Black voicing Bowser felt spot-on, Glover as a cartoon dinosaur felt like a less obvious but inspired fit.
Even Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri had some reservations about Glover as Yoshi, mostly on the actor’s behalf. He did know that he’d really just be saying "Yoshi," right?
