The Mario Cinematic Universe is now bigger than ever, thanks to the liberal use of space travel in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which brings in crossover characters like Star Fox's Fox McCloud and Pikmin. But there's one core Mario character who has yet to appear in Nintendo and Illumination's animated film franchise: Wario.
Sorry, the rumors weren't true. Wario does not make an appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, but the film does set up the potential for future installments that could bring in an array of characters from beyond the expected Mario canon. At some point, that would logically include Wario, the antithesis and occasional antagonist of the good-natured Mario.
With that inevitability in mind, Polygon recently spoke to the cast of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and asked for their picks on who should lend their voice to Wario. Much of the cast agree that one actor is an ideal fit for the role.
Danny DeVito should be Wario
Image: Sony PicturesCharlie Day, the voice of Luigi, told Polygon that his It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia costar is the obvious choice for Wario in a future Super Mario movie.
"I would choose my buddy Danny DeVito," Day said. "He's perfect for it. He's just so funny."
"Oh, that's a good choice! That's an excellent choice," said Donald Glover, the voice of Yoshi in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. "Just tell him to call up [Illumination CEO] Chris [Meledandri]. It works!"
"I love Danny DeVito as Wario" — Jack Black
While DeVito may be better known for live-action roles in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Batman Returns, and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the 81-year-old actor has a long list of animation credits. He famously appeared in The Simpsons as Homer Simpson's half-brother Herb Powell, and has prominent roles in Space Jam, The Lorax, and Disney’s Hercules.
Actor-director Benny Safdie, the voice of Bowser Jr., is also on board with DeVito. While Safdie originally suggested "Chris Pratt, but with a mustache" for Wario, he revised his answer to go with DeVito.
"Now you're speaking my language," said costar Jack Black, aka Bowser, when Safdie nominated DeVito. "I love Danny DeVito as Wario. He's a legend. No one knows that better than Charlie Day."
Black also had a second suggestion for Wario in Pedro Pascal, but supported the idea of Evil Version Chris Pratt as Wario, proclaiming the dual-casting idea to be "like Michael B. Jordan in Sinners!"
Keegan-Michael Key proposes a different Wario

"I'm going to go with a real deep-cut, weird pick: Michael Shannon," Key told Polygon in an interview. "Michael Shannon and I just did a film together where we both did voices in the film, and I was not aware of the fact that he can do no wrong. You gave Michael Shannon a crack at Wario? He would do something very interesting."
Shannon has less experience doing voice work for animation, but not zero: He was the voice of the Unshaven Man in FX animated series Little Demon, which also starred DeVito.
So, if you're thinking what I'm thinking, we might not just have our Wario, but a strong Waluigi candidate as well.
