When Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale ended in May 2025, it left us with an uncertain future for its characters, particularly when it comes to protagonist June Osborne's never-ending fight against Gilead. Now, less than a year later, Hulu's return to Gilead is almost here with The Testaments — and a new trailer dropped Thursday.
Based on the 2019 book of the same name by Margaret Atwood, the series is a coming-of-age story that follows a young girl named Agnes (Chase Infiniti) in a prep school for future wives of Gilead. Fans will immediately recognize her as June Osborne's daughter Hannah, who was adopted — or rather kidnapped — into Gilead society and renamed Agnes Mackenzie. The Testaments follows her as a young teen growing up in this theocratic society as she slowly comes to realize the sinister nature of how this world works.
The trailer opens with Agnes describing her childhood dollhouse, a scale model of her family home. "Dreams" by The Cranberries gives the early parts of the trailer an almost joyful tone as she reflects on what seems almost like an idyllic childhood. But because this is Gilead, things turn sinister pretty quickly.
“Back then, we still believed in this world," Agnes says as she and her friends walk up to see several dead bodies strung up on the wall. "I guess it’s easier to accept a story than believe that the people around you are monsters."
Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) returns as the headmistress of the school and introduces Agnes to a new student from Canada called Daisy (Lucy Halliday). That is, of course, a huge green flag in this world, since based on what we know from the previous series, most of the American rebels fighting the Gilead regime operate out of Canada. While Aunt Lydia talks about "bringing women back to their rightful place," Daisy talks about wanting to "save those girls." Agnes' other friends even comment on how she's changed since Daisy showed up. Sure enough, we see flashes of Daisy encouraging Agnes to take action and seize her own destiny as glimpses of a simmering rebellion are shown.
“We had no idea what we were capable of,” Agnes says. “It was time for us to change things.” True to the spirit of the previous series, it's women who lead the rebellion from the inside.
The Handmaid's Tale season 5 ended with Hannah around 12 years old, and it's hinted that she was on the cusp of transitioning into some kind of "wife school." While the rebellion had a number of key victories, particularly in the northeast in places like Boston, Gilead retained a strong foothold in the west, and Washington, D.C. remains its capital. Because most of the top commanders had been eliminated, various Gilead leaders from the west — like Commander McKenzie — were promoted to new positions and relocated at D.C. The Testaments begins a year or so later.
Whether June appears in the new series remains to be seen, but The Testaments makes it clear that her fight is far from over. And to see a new class of women resisting Gilead from the inside should offer a refreshing perspective on the franchise.
The Testaments begins streaming April 8 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.
