Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

If you grew up with video games, you definitely remember the pain of being dragged to a family Sunday lunch right when you were in the middle of a dungeon. Back then, we all lamented not having a magic portable version of our home consoles – but as they say, better late than never!

What happens is that a Reddit user, known as Cat_Faced, has finally put that collective childhood dream into practice, and the result is nothing short of spectacular.

A Childhood Dream Brought to Life

This Portable GameCube Briefcase is the Coolest Retro Mod Youll See Today 2

In a recent post on Reddit, the user Cat_Faced revealed a custom-built, portable Nintendo GameCube mounted inside a stylish yellow briefcase.

According to the modder, the idea was born from a long-held desire to build something he wished he’d owned as a kid – and yes, we all feel him! Also, it was the perfect excuse for him to finally dive into some of the modern trends: 3D modeling.

“I wanted to make something I wished I had as a kid," he wrote. "I love the design of luggable PCs, I love modding consoles, so I had plenty of parts, and I needed a good reason to finally learn how to 3D model. So I made this silly project.”

Games like Super Mario Sunshine and Sonic Adventure 2 Battle make up the very best platformers that the GameCube had to offer.

He spent about three months working on the portable build, and it wasn't just a matter of "fitting the console" into the briefcase. For instance, he included a 7-inch IPS screen, integrated speakers, Bluetooth lighting controlled by a mobile app (quite fancy!), and even voltmeters to monitor power consumption. Additionally, he repositioned the power buttons and the memory card slots to fit the new form factor.

The project also features some typical upgrades from the modding world, such as replacing the original fan with a Noctua one to reduce noise and installing PicoBoot with Swiss, running titles from a 256 GB microSD card to load and run the games (which are original, by the way).

But what is most impressive about this project is that this modified version of the GameCube was created using the original parts of the console itself; there is no emulation involved here! You can check his original post, alongside the photos of the result, right below:

As is common with projects of this type and most passion projects, the mod isn't quite finished, according to its own creator. In the same post, Cat_Faced explains that he still wants to implement further improvements, such as an HDMI switch to connect to TVs (to be able to play at friends’ houses or in the middle of travels, for example), Bluetooth controller adapters, and a screen bezel to hide wires and provide a cleaner finish.

Even so, this GameCube is already gorgeous, and my inner child is literally crying for not having had one of those back in the 2000s. To top it off, the creator has already tested his creation in high style with some classic games, booting up the classic The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker to make us all feel a little bit jealous!
