The same day as Assassin's Creed Shadows' one-year anniversary, Ubisoft has finally revealed the historical setting and officially confirmed the full cast of Netflix's upcoming Assassin's Creed show.

Netflix and Ubisoft have been collaborating to produce new AC content since as far back as 2016, but development on a live-action AC series didn't officially begin until 2020 alongside an animated and an anime AC series.

One Year Later, Assassin's Creed Shadows Remains One of the Most Divisive AC Games

After a year of small content updates and one major DLC, Assassin's Creed Shadows remains as one of Assassin's Creed's most divisive entries.

While details on the animated AC series are still unknown, Ubisoft and Netflix have begun slowly releasing news and casting information about the live-action series for several months.

Rumors and anonymous sources have previously suggested that the show would at least partially take place during 54 C.E. Ancient Rome, and now it seems those sources were correct in part as Ubisoft and Netflix have revealed that the upcoming show will take place during 64 C.E. Ancient Rome.

The Setting of Netflix's Assassin's Creed

According to Tudum, Netflix's official news site, Netflix's Assassin's Creed series will take place during 64 C.E. Ancient Rome and has officially begun production at Cinecitta Studios in Rome, Italy.

Details on the storyline and historical events or characters that will appear in the show are still unknown, but 64 C.E. was a notable year in Ancient Roman history as that was the year the Great Fire of Rome occurred, a destructive event that lasted for nine days and destroyed three quarters of the city of Rome.

The exact origin of the fire is unknown, though many historians and people of the time believed that Roman Emperor Nero started the fire as a catalyst to rebuild parts of the city in his own Greek-inspired designs.

Ubisoft and Netflix have revealed that the upcoming show will take place during 64 C.E. Ancient Rome.

Nero later blamed the fire on Christians and began arresting thousands of people, resulting in nearly 980 Christians being executed for entertainment or being crucified.

Nero was previously rumored as being a pivotal figure in the AC show, and it seems like he may actually be a potential antagonist for the show, potentially being a member of the Order of the Ancients, the ancient precursors to the Templar Order.

Tudum still describes the show as following, "...its characters across pivotal historical events as they battle to shape humanity's destiny," so the show may follow Nero to his death and its aftermath with the Year of the Four Emperors, or the show could potentially take place during multiple events throughout Rome's later history.

Ancient Rome hasn't been portrayed much in Assassin's Creed games aside from Aya's brief visit to the city to assassinate Julius Caesar in 44 B.C.E. in Assassin's Creed Origins, though the city was the primary setting of Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood in the early 16th century.

Netflix Assassin's Creed Full Cast

Along with the show's setting reveal, Ubisoft have additionally revealed the full cast of the show, which will be overseen by showrunners Roberto Patino, who wrote and executive produced HBO's Westworld, and David Wiener, who produced Paramount+'s live-action Halo show.

The full cast includes:

  • Lola Petticrew
  • Toby Wallace
  • Zachary Hart
  • Laura Marcus
  • Tanzyn Crawford
  • Nabhaan Rizwan
  • Claes Bang
  • Noomi Rapace
  • Ramzy Bedia
  • Sean Harris
  • Corrado Invernizzi
  • Sandra Guldberg-Kampp
  • Youseff Kerkour
  • Mirren Mack
  • Louis McCartney

No information about the roles these actors will play has been revealed yet, but Petticrew, Wallace, Hart, Marcus, Crawford, Rizwan, and Bang will be series regulars, so it's likely a few of these actors will play members of the Hidden Ones and the Order of the Ancients as well as a few historical figures like Nero.

Netflix's Assassin's Creed show still has no concrete release window, but since production has only just begun, fans can likely expect the series to debut in mid to late 2027, just in time to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Assassin's Creed franchise.
