In 2015, Sony found a bit of a surprise hit on their hands when exclusive title Until Dawn from Supermassive Games dropped into the narrative, "choose your own adventure"-type horror genre and captivated a large number of players who were determined to try to figure out how to save (or kill off) every character in the game.

For those looking for a quick (but not cheap) scare.

Since then, Until Dawn became enough of a success to spawn a feature-length film, and Supermassive Games went on to launch their Dark Pictures Anthology to somewhat mixed, but overall healthy enough reception between most of their titles. With how busy Supermassive has been post-Until Dawn, a sequel didn't really seem to be on the horizon for their original title.

Today, during the June 2, 2026, PlayStation State of Play, viewers were shocked then to see Until Dawn 2 pop onto their YouTube streams in the back half of the showcase. And no, it's not the most creative title for a sequel we've ever seen, but it does seem to be switching up quite a bit of details. Here's what we know so far, including the series now taking place in an entirely different biome this time around.

Until Dawn 2 is Headed to the Beach

In a bit of a surprise, Until Dawn 2 is being developed by Firesprite instead of Supermassive. On the PlayStation front, Firesprite is probably most well-known for their well-received PVSR2 title, Horizon: Call of the Mountain. It'll be very interesting to see how Firesprite is able to take up the Until Dawn mantle now in place of Supermassive, who have become fairly synonymous with the IP at this point.

The original Until Dawn follows a group of teenage friends to an isolated cabin on a snowy mountainside before, well... pretty much everything goes wrong. The game became famous for having tons of different outcomes available for the story's characters. It was possible to save everyone in the game from the terrors lurking in the dark, or you could cause everyone's death, too.

Similarly, Until Dawn 2 has adopted this same philosophy, which we see in the "Everyone can live, everyone can die" splash screen from the trailer. This time, however, your group of teenage wannabe influencers find themselves in a much more tropical environment.

According to more details provided by the PlayStation Blog, our group of playable main characters all work on a web show titled "Dead True," where they masquerade as paranormal investigators and stage fake ghost encounters in order to fuel their online popularity. Now paired up with a real TV network, the stakes have been raised, and they travel to a remote, reportedly haunted and ancient island in order to try to get some new footage for their swindled fandom.

It's a stark contrast to the snowy, frigid setting of the OG. In fact, the yin and yang here really couldn't be any more different. In a way, this is fascinating, as the "cabin in the woods" setting from the original feels a bit of a genre trope, while the tropical island paradise is a less frequently traveled horror destination. Interestingly, however, the trailer also shows a snippet of Dr. Hill, The Analyst from the first game, which means the two experiences are at least directly tied together in this one way.

It'll be very interesting to see how Firesprite is able to take up the Until Dawn mantle now in place of Supermassive, who have become fairly synonymous with the IP at this point.

While 2015's Until Dawn ultimately does go in some genuinely paranormal directions, we've yet to see anything as confirmed paranormal in the trailer for 2, so it'll be intriguing to see how this all plays out. Will our ghost hunters finally find what they've been pretending to hunt for all these years, or will the real horrors of the world prove to be more than they can handle anyway?

A Little Ways Off

We will, unfortunately, have to wait a little while longer for more details about this latest entry into the Until Dawn world. To this point, all we know is that it's slated to release some time in 2027.

Firesprite says they'll have more information rolling out in the coming months, so we'll just have to wait and see what else they're prepared to show us in near future.

Until then, start practicing your life and death decision-making skills. Until Dawn 2 is a lot closer than we thought before today, and we'll have a tropical, sexy new location to try to survive in this time around. Grab the sunscreen.
