Voidling Bound has nine total Voidlings for you to play as in this RPG, and while they can all get the job done on their own, if you splice in the right mutations, you'll have something far more lethal. Some Voidlings rank a bit lower than others, but these can bring them up to snuff.

Picking the best mutations means understanding which ones are on offer. Unlocking the mutations can be a problem, especially because you don't know what evolution each one is tied to.

This guide will give you an idea of what mutations you should grab from each Voidling's evolutionary tree. It'll help you know what path to take so you don't waste any mutagen on guessing.

What are Mutations?

Mutations are what put this great shooter in another category from the others. These are upgrades you get from evolving your Voidlings in specific paths. It does cost a good bit of mutagen to get there, though.

While, eventually, you can find yourself with plenty of mutagens, it can still be important to keep plenty for yourself, since you'll need them for splicing too. This guide will tell you which ones you'll want from each species.

You may notice that a lot of them are similar in terms of survival, and there's a reason for that. Getting to the hardest parts of this game requires you to be able to survive. Other than that, damage plays a big part, but most importantly, it is build potential.

Kwipeck

Secondary

Tertiary

Defensive

Ultimate

Rapid Fire Faucet

Shoot a continuous stream of ooze that damages enemies on impact.

Slurp Rocket

Shoot a large projectile that explodes on impact and hurts nearby enemies while leaving a damage-over-time puddle behind.

Claw and Peck

Dash and slash, executing low-health enemies.

Humm It Up

A quick dash for evading incoming attacks.

Let it Rain

Unleash a downpour of projectiles from the sky, exploding and damaging enemies on impact.

The Kwipeck is a pretty straightforward Voidling, but it still has some mutations that can be really integral to getting some great builds together. The mutations below simply signify the ones that slot best into most builds and have some flexibility.

  • Volcanic Glass Skin — Gain 1 Block charge after using your secondary ability.
  • Deadly Dose — Deal additional damage on hit to enemies affected by Poison. The number of Poison stacks increases the damage dealt.
  • Spontaneous Combustion — Dealing damage to an enemy has a 30% chance to spawn a damage-over-time lava puddle. This effect has a 3-second cooldown.
  • Poisonous Thorns — When you take damage, apply 15 Poison stacks to the instigating enemy and 2 stacks to the two closest targets.
  • Smoke Cloud — Apply Burn and Slow to nearby enemies.

While lacking some generally applicable mutations, these do a great job of clearing out mobs and keeping you safe. Most of these probably won't be the centerpiece of a build, but they will make things much more interesting.

Gilick

Primary

Secondary

Tertiary

Defensive

Ultimate

Buck Bark

Shoot a spreading blast of projectiles that damages enemies on impact.

Kinetic Drop

Leap and smash into the ground, creating a shockwave that damages enemies.

Slash And Bash

Dash and slash, executing low-health enemies.

Counter Blast

Gain Block and spawn a damage-dealing whirlwind. On Block, release a devastating blast.

Blunder Streak

Hurl out a powerful damage-dealing wave of projectiles and create a damage-over-time blast zone on the ground that quickly shreds through enemies.

The Gilick isn't a personal favorite of mine, but it does offer some of arguably the best mutations for other Voidlings. You'll want to locate the Golden Egg that has the Andromeda Gilick in it, for this one.

  • Aftershock — Create a damaging cone-shaped aftershock when dealing melee damage.
  • Watch Them Burn! — Heal for 100% of Burn damage dealt to enemies.
  • Abyssal Grasp — Heal for 15% of melee damage.
  • Snowfall — Drop projectiles from the sky that damage enemies on hit.
  • Bubble Pop (Golden Egg) — Hitting an enemy affected by Float makes it pop, removing Float and dealing a burst of damage in a wide area.

Both Abyssal Grasp, Aftershock, and Watch Them Burn! are great additions to the more melee-focused Voidlings, and when paired with the right mutations, can be perfect for health upkeep. Snowfall and Bubble Pop are more general good stuff, but still can offer some great free damage for certain builds.

Kerapin

Secondary

Tertiary

Defensive

Ultimate

Burst Barf

Shoot 3 projectiles in quick succession.

Explosive Fling

Toss an explosive that damages enemies after a short delay.

Fist Fury

A strong melee attack that damages enemies.

Stand Your Ground

Spawn a protective force field that stops incoming projectiles.

Shellsplosion

Rush forward, gaining increasing momentum and exploding into a devastating blast that tosses damage-dealing explosive charges in all directions.

While the lowest on the rankings of Voidlings, the Kerapin still brings in some strong mutations. These are mostly just general good stuff, but they can offer some great balance to a build.

  • Hemotoxin — Drop healing orbs when enemies take Poison damage.
  • Mark of the Storm — On Hit Mark trigger, summon a damage-over-time typhoon. Enemies within range are periodically applied with Hit Mark.
  • Reservoir Overflow — Casting abilities charge up a powerful blast that unleashes once fully charged.
  • Healing Roots — Spawn a zone that heals over time after being stationary for 3 seconds.
  • Recycling (Golden Egg) — If your secondary ability has charges, gain a charge on kill.

Recycling is one of the best mutations in the game, especially for clearing Void Strikes, and with Mark of the Storm, you can just get free damage by surviving. Hemotoxin and Healing Roots can offer some survivability, and Reservoir Overflow just nets bursts of damage for attacking.

Gwigoon

Primary

Secondary

Tertiary

Defensive

Ultimate

Bouncing Blast Routine

Unleash a blast that damages nearby enemies. On hit, grants a minion charge.

Goon Squad Roll

Spawn minions that attack nearby enemies with a damage-dealing blast. Minions' health and fire rate scale with their owner's attributes.

Aerial Pull

Shoot a projectile that damages enemies and stops on impact. Use the ability again to quickly teleport to the projectile's location.

Evasive Acrobatics

Scatter your minions while you avoid incoming damage with an evasive cartwheel that grants Invulnerable.

Tumbling Frenzy

Unleash a chaotic swarm of high-damage, self-destructing explosive minions.

Gwigoon is a complicated Voidling to learn and use effectively, but its mutations can be helpful and make some interesting gameplay mechanic changes. While not the best overall, these mutations can be a fantastic addition to some builds.

  • Stink Bomb — Shoot a toxic cloud that applies Poison to enemies in a random direction when using a primary ability. 0.5-second cooldown.
  • Undead — Revive on death. 60-second cooldown.
  • Soul Crushing — Gain 1 Damage stack and heal a small amount when destroying souls released by enemies.
  • Plane Shift — Stop time while Invisible.
  • Researcher (Golden Egg) — 15% increased research points dropped on kill.

Undead is arguably a must-pick because it's just a free do-over every 60 seconds. Soul Crushing is no slouch either, and can help keep your damage and health up. Researcher is great for when you're running a little low on research points, and Plane Shift can make a big difference in an invisibility build.

Anami

Ability

Primary

Secondary

Tertiary

Defensive

Ultimate

Homing Gaze

Shoot homing projectiles at a selected target.

Return Orb

Shoot a projectile that passes through enemies and returns to your character. The projectile may damage enemies once on its way out and once on its way back.

Tail Whip

A swift melee attack that damages nearby enemies and finishes in a tail spin.

Bunny Hop

A quick hop that passes through enemies.

Crystal Spires

Summon 3 crystal spires that periodically shoot obliterating shards at enemies.

The traditionally fast Anami actually offers up some mutations that'll slot really well into any build. These honestly aren't super great for Anami itself, but for some of the other Voidlings, they can be a big help.

  • Warm Up Strike — If the ability is stackable, gain 1 secondary ability charge on tertiary ability use.
  • Amplification — Gain a Damage stack on secondary ability use.
  • Oxidation — Periodically gain 1 Block charge.
  • Hypothermia — Deal 200% direct damage to enemies affected by Frostbite Stun.
  • MutaGenics (Golden Egg) — 25% Increased mutagen drop chance.

It seems pretty obvious here what the focus is: ability usage that just gets more ability usage. Aside from that, Block is always a great addition, and MutaGenics will help you continue to test out builds and unlock even more mutagen.

Ur-Sek

Ability

Details

Primary

Secondary

Tertiary

Defensive

Ultimate

Bash/Slash

Ur bashes enemies with powerful, heavy strikes. Sek slashes enemies with a series of swift strikes, followed up by an overwhelming final blow.

Bile Up/Swarm Out

Ur casts a line of bile puddles that damages enemies over time. Sek unleashes a swarm of hivelings that seek out acquired targets and deal damage.

Roar/Screech

Ur roars, emitting a cone-shaped sound wave that applies Damage Reduction. Sek screeches and applies Armor Reduction in a wide area.

Blind Charge

Ur and Sek rush down the field with a defensive barrier that stops incoming projectiles.

Ur - Sek Swap

Toggle between controlling Ur and Sek, each with a different ability set. First, Ur lunges, deals damage, and applies Stun to nearby enemies. Then, Sek takes over, lunges, and unleashes a swarm of locusts that damages nearby enemies, then Ur takes over.

The most powerful Voidling, of course, has some of the most powerful mutations. These are a little more specific in terms of their use, but that doesn't stop them from being insanely strong.

  • Power Drain — Apply Damage Reduction to enemies on direct hit. Gain Damage for each nearby affected enemy.
  • Infestation — Release 3 swarms of leeches that seek and drain life from enemies when using your tertiary ability.
  • Deadly Weakness — Deal 50% additional damage when enemies have 5 Disintegration stacks.
  • Sticky Strike — Deal 25% additional damage for each Slow stack on an enemy.
  • Spiked Exoskeleton — On Block, release sequential bursts that apply Stun to nearby enemies.

Infestation is a mainstay in many of my builds because you can use it to keep your health up without too much danger. Power Drain is fantastic for improving your damage output, and Spiked Exoskeleton just makes Block even better. They all work pretty well on their own except Deadly Weakness and Sticky Strike, but those can still slot into some different builds.

Nimiod

Ability

Details

Primary

Secondary

Tertiary

Defensive

Ultimate

Proximity Spark

Shoot out a damage-dealing spark at the closest enemy within a radius that has a chance to apply Elemental Status on hit.

Network Extender

Spawn a network node that connects to your character when in range and responds to your abilities.

Drop-Down Offensive Strike

Slam into the ground, damaging nearby enemies. The slam size and damage scale with the number of charges.

Blink Protocol

Blink a short distance, becoming Invulnerable and Invisible while teleporting.

Instant Diffusion

Swiftly swarm the field with 6 network nodes.

Nimiods are one of the weirdest Voidlings, and with that comes some interesting, but specific mutations. These mostly fit into more specific builds, but they do such a great job at it that it's hard not to want them.

  • Sitting Ducks (Golden Egg) — Deal double damage to enemies affected by Float.
  • Airborne Pathogen — On Hit Mark trigger, spread an airborne pathogen to a random enemy. The pathogen applies Hit Mark.
  • Decomposition — Add a Poison stack each time an enemy takes Poison damage.
  • Ground Shock — Periodically strike the ground with a powerful lightning explosion that damages and applies Static to enemies.
  • Static Charge — Whenever you trigger a Static Discharge, a damage-dealing field surrounding your character grows. Enemies within the field are applied with Static periodically. Over time, the field returns to its original size.

Anything that deals damage over time or can help apply some stacks of debuff can always fit well into any build with that debuff type. Airborne Pathogen just gives you some great damage over time without too much risk, and Static Charge, while specific, does an excellent job of applying Static and keeping it applied to a large group.

Laser Fan

Shoot a fan of lasers that damages enemies on impact.

Focused Charge

Charge a dash attack that damages and knocks back enemies in its path.

Gem Strike

A swift melee attack that damages nearby enemies.

Concussive Slam

A short dash that stuns nearby enemies.

Void Maw

Invoke a wormhole that sucks in nearby enemies and collapses into a blast of damage.

These buggy boys are a little more frustrating than their fellow Voidling brethren. For starters, two of the best mutations are on Golden Egg Voidlings, and beyond that, it feels like slim pickings for what can be applied to many builds.

  • Hellfire (Golden Egg) — Burn damage deals triple damage.
  • Release the Swarm — On Block, release a swarm that follows your character and applies Infested to enemies.
  • Locust Burst (Golden Egg) — Fear and damage nearby enemies when killing an Infested enemy.
  • Cloaked Chrysalis — Regenerates health while Invisible.
  • Repulsion Barrier — Spawn a forcefield on secondary ability use.

Hellfire and Locust Burst are fantastic for damage output, and Hellfire even makes a good mutation to build around itself. Release the Swarm and Cloaked Chrysalis will need a specific kind of building to become something more worthwhile. Repulsion Barrier, on the other hand, can be great if you can't generate Block naturally.

Morfang

Ability

Primary

Secondary

Tertiary

Defensive

Ultimate

Claw Fury

Unleash a relentless assault of claw swipes.

Lunging Bite

Lunge and rip enemies to shreds by attacking through them. A short press dashes a short distance, while a long press dashes a long distance.

Whack-a-Mole

Uppercut and apply Float when the ability is empowered.

Burrow

Burrow underground, evading enemy projectiles and melee attacks.

Trench Warfare

Burrow underground and place a trail of explosive mines, each detonating into a swarm of damage-dealing shrapnel.

Second best in the rankings, but these mutations are phenomenal for eliminating enemies and clearing the battlefield. While not totally perfect, most of the best builds can incorporate one of these somehow.

  • Corrosive Bile (Golden Egg) — Apply Armor Reduction to enemies affected by Poison over time.
  • Fatal Wound — Execute enemies with Bleed below 50% health.
  • Collapsing Matter — Spawn a black hole that pulls in nearby enemies when dealing Disintegration damage. Remove stacks from the target.
  • Exorcism — Execute enemies on Hit Mark trigger. Killing an enemy applies Hit Mark to a distant enemy. Elite enemies and bosses take a burst of damage instead of being executed
  • Impending Doom — Prevent death for a short duration. To fully prevent dying, kill an enemy while this ability is active.

Impending Doom is simply fantastic as it'll give you a second lease on life. Exorcism and Fatal Wound both offer a great way to terminate the fodder on the field without too much trouble. Corrosive Bile and Collapsing Matter will need some help, but they can both offer some fantastic advantages in battle.

No matter how you like to play this great RPG shooter, most of these mutations will offer you something. It can be a bit daunting at first since resources seem so slim, but with some thorough game exploration, you can walk away with more than enough resources to make your perfect build.
