Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).

If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.

Warhorse Studios, the Czech developer behind the ambitious Kingdom Come: Deliverance franchise, won over a legion of fans with its 2018 debut and further deepened its RPG formula with the 2025 sequel.

While there are few exact replicas of Kingdom Come: Deliverance, there are certainly a handful of games that can get the job done.

However, since then, the team has been completely silent about their next project, leaving everyone wondering what they are planning next. But a new rumor suggests they might be about to make Lord of the Rings fans very happy.

An Open-World Middle-Earth?

According to Polish industry veteran Richard Chojnowski, Warhorse is currently developing a game set in the universe created by J.R.R. Tolkien.

The statement was made during an appearance on the Tolkien Polska podcast, where Chojnowski revealed he has been hearing this rumor from various sources for a couple of months, noting that the whispers have intensified in recent weeks.

The project is reportedly an open-world RPG with a massive budget in the $100 million range, which is a clear indicator that the Czech developers intend to keep pushing their ambitious boundaries. The game would also be partially funded by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), a company that has been increasingly investing in the gaming and esports industries in recent years.

While that’s where the specific details end, it is worth noting that it hasn't been long since rumors of a third-person Lord of the Rings action game first surfaced, and many now believe these two reports are referring to the same project.

So far, Warhorse has not publicly commented on the speculations, neither confirming nor denying them. And this kind of silence often adds more fuel to the fire in the gaming world, as outright falsehoods are usually debunked quickly.

While we wait for official word, we can only imagine what a Tolkien-inspired world would look like in the hands of this studio! I actually had the pleasure of attending a Warhorse press event in 2024 for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and I saw firsthand that these developers give their all to build truly complex and engaging RPGs – and the game’s massive script that exceeds 2.2 million words doesn't lie!

I mention this because I truly hope for something as innovative as Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor rather than the Lord of the Rings: Gollum experience that many of us would prefer to forget. And Warhorse definitely has the pedigree to deliver something special! But, for now, we just have to wait and see.
