What we know about the fourth zone

The Marathon Cryo Archive is considered to be the fourth zone — map, essentially — in the game, but it isn't available at launch. That's because players must unlock the path to orbit first, meaning Cryo Archive is essentially a collective objective for every Marathon player to strive for.

Some information exists already though, so here's everything we know about Marathon's Cryo Archive so far.

What is Cryo Archive in Marathon?

We know that Cryo Archive is the zone aboard the first floor of the UESC Marathon ship, which is hovering in orbit above Tau Ceti IV. According to a Bungie blog post, it will be the first "endgame" zone in Marathon, and consists of "security puzzles, frozen vaults, and an entity even the UESC fears." However, since you'll be competing against other squads at the same time, it's no wonder Cryo Archive is considered endgame content. It also doesn't sound doable for solo players... unless they get very lucky.

Since the community needs to collectively unlock the way into orbit, however, Cryo Archive is a little way off. As for how we do that? All we know right now is that we'll "soon discover a way aboard the derelict UESC Marathon ship" as we begin to explore the surface. Reading between the lines in this official blog, Bungie sounds fairly confident it won't take too long.

In the launch trailer, embedded above, we also see plenty of Cryo Archive from a cinematic view, though. It doesn't tell us what it'll be like to play in the zone, but it does give a hint of the sort of environment we can expect.
