Covering the video games industry since 2017, with experience in news, articles, lists, and reviews (and I blame The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask for that).
If you are a fan of RPGs and want a third-person version: Tayná Garcia is a Brazilian journalist (but you can call her Tay) who ended up working with video games after finishing Zelda: Majora's Mask when she was a kid. With more than eight years of experience in the segment, she has been an assistant editor at Jovem Nerd in the past and is currently a contributor at DualShockers and a writer for gaming magazines for Editora Europa. Oh, and she may like Hideo Kojima a bit too much.
Scott Pilgrim EX is the latest beat ‘em up to expand the beloved universe created by Bryan Lee O’Malley, and it sure lived up to the hype, bringing a brand-new story that involves different timelines and multiple twists.
Unlike the more straightforward levels of its predecessor, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game, this new journey features a non-linear structure. So, in order to see everything the game has to offer, you’ll need to do a bit of backtracking and navigate between different timelines. And this design choice ensures that every stage is packed with small details and hidden secrets waiting to be discovered by curious players.

Among these secrets are several locked doors scattered throughout the map that require Golden Keys to be opened, and they are hidden inside some specific objects in the scenarios.
Since some of these are tucked away in breakable objects you might completely ignore, having a roadmap is essential for any completionist looking to master the game. That’s why we have this perfect guide that shows you the exact location of every Golden Key in Scott Pilgrim EX, as well as where to find the doors they unlock.
Whether you are looking to earn extra cash through side quests or just trying to reach the final boss, here is everything you need to know about these elusive items.
All Golden Key Locations in Scott Pilgrim EX
The Golden Key #1
The Golden Key you can grab earliest in the game is at the Movie Studio, accessible right at the start of Chapter 2: On the Beach – meaning you only need to finish Chapter 1: Metal Scott Underground, which basically serves as the game's tutorial.
After that, enter the Movie Studio through the car parking turnstiles to find the backstage movie set area where Envy and the dressing room are located. Head all the way to the right until you find a wooden table, then break it to reveal the first Golden Key of Scott Pilgrim EX.
The Golden Key #2
The second Golden Key is also available quite early in the game, starting from the same chapter (the beginning of Chapter 2: On the Beach). However, this one is located in Downtown, which requires you to head toward the areas on the right side of the map, past the blocked subway (jump the crates and barrels inside it to go through it).
Once you reach Downtown, which is an area filled with various local shops, walk to the far right until you spot a lone blue mailbox, right in front of the Chompers Drug Mart. Smash it to reveal your second Golden Key!
The Golden Key #3
The third Golden Key requires you to advance a bit further into the story, becoming available at the start of Chapter 3: The Hidden Castle, when the Casa Vania location is unlocked. You can access it through a portal in the Suburbs (the streets where Stephen Still's and Wallace's houses are located).
Right in the castle’s entrance hall, you will see several wooden benches. On the left, one of these has a green book sitting on top of it – and this is the one that is hiding your Golden Key from you. Break it to reveal the item inside!
The Golden Key #4
For the fourth Golden Key, you must first reach Chapter 5: Back to School and unlock the No-Account Video store in the Shopping Area to gain access to the School (you just need to buy the last item in the shop).
Once inside, head to the second floor of the building (defeat every enemy you find on your way). On this floor, you need to break the garbage can located on the extreme left side of the area, literally right in front of the stairs. Doing so will reveal the lovely Golden Key.
The Golden Key #5
The fifth Golden Key is the only one you are strictly required to find to progress through the main story, which occurs at the start of Chapter 6: The Great Lord Burger, since it unlocks one of the main bosses (The Great Lord Burger).
It is located back at Casa Vania, so head straight to the castle. Then, head to the cemetery area on the left side of the entrance hall. You will find a lonely gravestone right in the center of the area, so break it to reveal the item. This will also trigger some enemies to spawn and try to stop you, so just defeat them to ensure the Golden Key is officially yours.
The Golden Key #6
The sixth Golden Key can be found at the VPD Headquarters, so this one requires significant progress, as it only becomes accessible in Chapter 10: The Lucky Mic, once you can finally destroy the car blocking the entrance.
Inside the VPD HQ, head all the way to the right to find two stacked cardboard boxes. Destroy them to reveal the hidden Golden Key.
The Golden Key #7
Finally, the seventh and final Golden Key is located at Lee’s Place, which only becomes accessible during the final chapter of the game, Chapter 12: The Grand Finale.
It is hidden in an alleyway within the Wastelands (the area immediately before the final boss fight). The entrance is nestled between the Nihon Sushi and Final Cup shops. When you get in, look for some barrels in the area, since the Golden Key is hidden inside one of them.
Where to Use the Golden Keys
In the Shopping Area
Head to the Shopping Area, the main district of shops unlocked early in Chapter 2: On the Beach, and find the locked door just left of the High Park entrance.
Use your Golden Key by holding it and pressing the hit button in front of the door to reveal the Seventh Eleven bar. This is a hidden area where you can try out the "Roll the Die" side quest for extra cash, since it is a mission that you can repeat several times.
In the High Park
Right at the entrance of High Park (which is accessed through the Shopping Area and has Julie Powers' store), you immediately bump into a locked door of a small castle. When opened, it reveals a chest minigame that resets from time to time, where you need to pick one out of three chests to earn a random reward that can be coins, HP or GP.
Inside the School
This one requires you to reach Chapter 5: Back to School and gain access to the School via the No-Account Video store (you just need to buy the last item in the shop, and you can do this multiple times).
When you get inside the school, go to the first floor where Simon Lee is working in the cafeteria and look for a locked door in the middle of the hallway. Use a Golden Key here to unlock the Dojo, where you will find the regular version of Simon Lee offering the challenging “Hell of Fighting 96 Guys” side quest that, as the title suggests, requires you to defeat 96 vegan enemies in a row and rewards you with a lot of coins and a power-up.
In the Medieval Fort
This is the only locked door that is directly linked to the campaign of Scott Pilgrim EX, meaning you need to unlock to progress in the main story.
It is the locked door with a “Burger” sign hanging above it in the middle of the Medieval Fort at the start of Chapter 6: The Great Lord Burger. By unlocking it, you gain access to one of the mandatory bosses, The Great Lord Burger.
Inside the VPD Headquarters
There are two locked doors at the VPD Headquarters, a place that you only have access after reaching Chapter 10: The Lucky Mic and destroying the powered-up Vegan Van in front of the building.
Inside the VPD HQ, head down the main corridor all the way to the left. There you will find an exit leading to an area with two prison-like cells (and Jimmy right next to them). Each cell requires its own Golden Key, and, once opened, some pretty powerful enemies will appear, and defeating them rewards you with high-value chests.
