Resident Evil Requiem has taken the gaming world by storm, but few people are talking about the meticulously designed inventory management system and the delicious chum buckets dotted around the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center. Instead, quite literally everyone is talking about the hotness of series heartthrob Leon S. Kennedy. Unfortunately for all you yearners out there, it turns out that our hero is probably married — and, sorry, not to you. Read on to find out more about why we have reason to think someone’s made an honest man out of Mr. Kennedy, and who the lucky candidates are.
Spoilers ahead for the finale of Resident Evil Requiem.
In Requiem’s closing moments, as Leon walks away from Grace, he removes the gloves that have been coloring the blotchy discolorations on his hands throughout most of the game. He reaches into his back pocket, and though his back is turned to the camera, his movement suggests he’s putting on a ring. You’ll have the option to unlock a bunch of the game’s concept art after completing your first playthrough of the game, and the bottom-right of Leon’s image shows two versions of his left hand — one ravaged by virus, the other sporting a simple band on that finger.
Image: Capcom via PolygonThough Capcom hasn’t confirmed anything officially about Leon’s love life — Requiem’s director told Polygon he “can't comment on Leon's private life” — that hasn’t stopped fans from cooking up their own ideas. The sly reveal has kicked off a theorycrafting love triangle reminiscent of Final Fantasy 7’s Clerith vs. Cloti debate, only instead of Cloud being torn between Aerith and Tifa, Leon’s torn between his zombie-slaying galpals Ada Wong and Claire Redfield.
The case for Ada Wong
Image: CapcomThigh dagger and slinky gown enthusiast Ada Wong is an enigmatic spy who’s crossed paths with Leon in three games. Their relationship has always had a seductive charge to it; Ada refers to Leon as “smooth” and “handsome,” while Leon describes Ada as “a part of me I can’t let go” in Resident Evil 4.
While the two have teamed up on numerous occasions, Ada’s loyalties are constantly shifting and she quite literally doesn’t stay in one place for too long. Leon might be smitten with her, and they did kiss that one time in Resident Evil 2, but Ada just doesn’t seem like the marrying kind. It’s more likely she gave him a promise ring and told him to be a good boy.
As much as Resident Evil fans seem to like Ada, many of them seem to be content with her absence from Requiem. “It's just a breath of fresh air that for the first time in a Resident Evil game, I don't have to see the same song and dance between Leon and Ada again,” one Reddit user said. On the other hand, as another commenter pointed out: “it would be a little silly if they dropped the Ada thing after literally 30 years of teasing it.”
The case for Claire Redfield
CapcomClaire was Leon’s co-protagonist in Resident Evil 2, and the events of that game are pivotal to those of Requiem. Claire’s temporary companion in that game, Sherry, helps to guide Leon throughout his journey in Requiem, hinting that Leon and Claire have stayed in touch over the years.
In the later hours of Requiem, Leon revisits the Raccoon City Police Department that he and Claire were forced to escape from in RE2. Though Claire is never directly mentioned, we do get a couple brief references to her brother Chris at the end of the game. First, the masked trooper who comes to rescue Leon and Grace from ARK says, “I have a message from Captain Redfield.” Though Chris isn’t among the rescue party, Leon says “I’m sure I’ll run into him at some point,” which some fans have read as an indication that these guys see one another all the time since they’re brothers-in-law, though I think that’s a bit of a stretch.
A slightly more compelling stretch in Claire’s favor is that one of Leon’s gun charms, the Trusted Companion, depicts her in miniature while wearing her red jacket ensemble from RE2. A Reddit thread that makes the case for a Claire-Leon union notes that the Japanese term for companion has a different connotation: it’s the person who “has your back at the end of the world,” not just a colleague you shoot zombies with sometimes.
The case for Chris Redfield
Image: CapcomThere isn’t one. Sorry. I just like the way this Reddit poster thinks: “They won't say it outright, but you'll play Chris in the DLC and see an identical ring on his hand.” If you thought the Resident Evil fandom has been feral for Leon now, a twist like this could triple Requiem’s sales.
