PlayStation's summer State of Play showcase kicked off Summer Game Fest week with a bang on Tuesday, opening with a 10-minute deep dive into Marvel's Wolverine, which launches Sept. 15. The new footage showed the gruff anti-hero fighting alongside Jean Grey to rescue a group of young mutants captured on the orders of billionaire industrialist Bolivar Trask. The violent and visceral footage made clear that all the time and money Insomniac spent perfecting its cutting-edge "blood tech" hasn't gone to waste. But plenty of viewers also took note of the developer's pioneering innovations in body hair rendering — and they were making their enthusiasm known on social media long into the night.

"I'm so GLAD Wolverine is this HAIRY AHHH," wrote X user Deaf David. "A lot of artists don't draw body hair on their characters. Much appreciated, Insomniac," replied user Dogmandi2025. Several commenters in the thread also noted that it was weird and disappointing that Logan didn't seem to have armpit hair, despite having a luxuriant pelt seemingly everywhere else on his body. And they're right!

"Why is he hairy everywhere BUT his armpits how am i supposed to goon to this," lamented another X user.

Even other game studios had to tip their hat to Insomniac on this one, with Devolver Digital praising Marvel's Wolverine for its "technical achievement in arm and shoulder hair."

While many viewers took the occasion to appraise Wolverine's goods, the praise wasn't entirely universal. One redditor on the r/gaymers forum noted that the Marvel Rivals in-game model more accurately captured Logan's shapely cakes. "Imo twink pete has a better body model than wolvie in the insomniac games," wrote redditor RayneWalker. "Is it bad that rivals has spoiled me with cakes upon cakes and bulges packing for days?" I'm no Marvel comics expert, but I'm pretty sure literally no one cares about Peter Parker's ass, so this seems like a pretty serious criticism.

2026 has already been a banner year for people who love burly dudes in their video games. Back in February, Resident Evil Requiem's older, hotter version of Leon Kennedy set hearts aflame worldwide. An "unofficial committee" of women developers at Capcom spent a great deal of time refining Leon's design, steering it toward the Japanese ideal of "ikeoji" or "hot uncle." Will Insomniac's hirsuite hero give the year's hottest video game hunk a run for his money? Depends how much fun Insomniac wants to have with Wolvy's outfit options.

Marvel's Wolverine will be released on PlayStation 5 on Sept. 15.
