Melissa Sarnowski has been a game writer for over two years. While she's willing to dig into any game for an article, she heavily focuses on The Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil, Final Fantasy, and The Sims content, having played games from each franchise since she was a child.

Players have been trying to figure out the identity of the player character in Poppy Playtime from the time the first chapter was released. Naturally, there have been hints towards that identity included in each chapter so far, but Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 gives you the biggest hint yet, and it feels like the character's identity is all but officially confirmed with that.

We Need More Horror Games That Embrace The Ordinary

As we enter a horror gaming Renaissance, more developers should incorporate the mundane.

The community has had a strong theory about whom the player might be, but Chapter 5 actually broke apart that theory and basically confirms a different possibility. When you take a look at some of the details that point to the player's identity throughout the first five chapters, you can get a decent guess at who you might be.

10 Former Employee

You Start With This Information

Poppy Playtime Chapter 1 Menu

The first chapter starts out with a letter that you've received, along with a VHS tape. The tape is the Poppy Playtime doll's maintenance information, which now has horrifying undertones after exploring the factory, but the letter at this point is more interesting.

The letter tells you that some of the coworkers you used to work with at Playtime Co. are still in the factory, and they're still alive. It's a request for help, and it confirms that you were once an employee at Playtime a decade ago. This turns out to be quite important as far as information goes.

9 Toys Recognize You

Although Some Are Hostile Because of It

Poppy Playtime ch 5 Huggy Reunion

Toys in the upper levels of Playtime Co.'s factory make comments about recognizing you, and they seem surprised that you've returned after a decade. As you might expect, since they were left behind as living toys, they aren't thrilled to see you. Instead, they're more excited about having a chance to kill you.

Interestingly, as you go deeper into the factory, you receive fewer comments from toys recognizing you. They start to openly wonder who you are and how you managed to get inside and to the locations that would be more hidden from normal employees. It implies that you weren't involved when you worked there, but that might not be the truth.

8 The Hour of Joy

You Weren't Present That Day

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Teaser Fire

Once you learn about the Hour of Joy, it's quite obvious that you weren't at work that day. While it could've been that you no longer worked at the factory at that point, that's unlikely to be the case, especially with who Chapter 5 implies you might be.

Instead, you simply got lucky enough that you weren't working at the factory on that day, but the Prototype seems upset that you weren't there, as the nightmare sequence in Chapter 3 accuses you of not being present when you should've been. However, that could be the survivor's guilt manifesting.

7 You Aren't Rich

A Red Herring for Your Identity

Poppy Playtime Rich Tape

In Chapters 1–4, you can find a tape about an employee named Rich Avery. The consistency and story of Rich led to the popular theory that you play as Rich returning to investigate the letter you got from your former coworkers, likely concerned that they claim to still be inside the factory.

However, Rich was under scrutiny by Leith and Eddie. He was becoming a champion of the people, and they didn't like that, so Leith decided to keep him close. Unfortunately, the days that Leith would be keeping Rich close line up with the day the Hour of Joy happens, meaning Rich likely died alongside Leith.

6 Hostile Toys

Most Toys Are Unhappy to See You

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Giblet

This detail is likely due to a mix of reasons. First, if the toys weren't hostile, then there wouldn't be any chase sequences or the stress of being hunted in the factory, so mechanics play a big role here. Second, toys like Mommy Long Legs and Huggy Wuggy seem to be outright hostile by default with few exceptions, such as Mommy being calm around children and Huggy being calm around Kissy Missy.

However, many toys who are deeper in the factory aren't hostile toward you right away, at least the named toys that have dialog, such as Giblet, Doey, and Chum. Instead, they seem more interested in the fact that somebody from the outside has managed to get so far in the factory, showing no recognition towards you.

5 Eddie's Schedule

The Biggest Identity Clue

Poppy Playtime Joy on the Wall

In Chapter 5, you learn a detail about Eddie Ritterman's schedule that makes all the pieces fit together in a way that almost confirms that you play as Eddie. You find a conversation between Eddie and Leith, as both of them hold high positions running Playtime Co., where they discuss the upcoming days, and those days line up exactly with the Hour of Joy.

While Eddie tells Leith to keep Rich close to deal with him becoming the hero of the people, Eddie has to go inspect a park. He's scheduled to be gone starting on August 7, and that means he won't be at Playtime Co. for the Hour of Joy on August 8, sparing him from certain death.

4 Eddie's Personality

Being a Recluse Means He Won't Be Recognized

Poppy Playtime ch 5 Lily Lovebraids

Eddie Ritterman is described as a recluse. He rarely interacted with other employees to the point that most of them had never seen his face. This is a key detail for the player being Eddie, as previously it was believed that Harley Sawyer would recognize him, but Harley admits that he's never seen you before when you meet him in Chapter 4.

However, if Eddie was so reclusive that he only met with select employees, such as Leith, who would be his equal, then Harley not recognizing you makes sense, even with Eddie being his boss. It also explains why the majority of toys don't recognize you either, despite Eddie being key to the research division.

3 Eddie Could Be Alive

He's Young Enough to Survive

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Huggy Breaking Glass

The game is set a decade after the Hour of Joy, and at that point Eddie would be about 59 years old, given what you learn about him in-game. Since he avoided the Hour of Joy, Eddie is likely still alive at the start of Poppy Playtime as that would have been the biggest threat to his life, and it's confirmed that he was not at the factory on that day.

Considering the circumstances, Eddie would probably take precautions to not be in a situation where another Hour of Joy could happen. He might have even retired or quit and found a new job. The question then would be why he bothers to go back to Playtime Co. after receiving a letter.

2 Eddie's Personality

This Hints Against You Being Him

Poppy Playtime ch 5 Backup Doctor

For all the details that point towards you being Eddie, there are some that point against this being your identity. At least, there are details that would make you being Eddie seem strange, as it doesn't make sense as to why he would return to the factory after everything, especially with his role in the experiments.

Eddie is described as ruthless, and the biggest display of this would be what he did to Harley Sawyer. After the Theater Incident, Eddie no longer trusted Harley. This resulted in him giving the approval to have Harley turned into the Doctor, so they'd still have his knowledge but with the ability to control him.

1 Poppy's Speech

Possibly a Hallucination in Poppy Gel

Poppy Playtime Chapter 5 Put in Gel

At the end of Chapter 5, there's a sequence that you can't avoid where you end up in a vat of Poppy Gel. During this sequence, you hear Poppy talking to you about if you one day gain a conscience and return to the factory. Overall, this is a strange sequence, and it's not clear how much of it actually happens versus how much is hallucinated.

However, it's interesting that Poppy is talking about you gaining a conscience, as this points towards you being Eddie, who was known to be ruthless. She wouldn't say this to somebody like Rich, so it lines up with the other details you find up to this point. It would also give you a reason to return as Eddie if you grew older and started feeling guilty about what you've done at Playtime Co.

Although there's not any official confirmation regarding the identity of your character, it now seems likely that you're Eddie Ritterman. This goes against the popular theory that you play as Rich, but it also comes with interesting baggage given Eddie's role in the company and his known personality. Hopefully, Mob Entertainment will include more details to point towards who you are in Poppy Playtime with Chapter 6.
