Who would have thought that even after getting a sizable amount of nerfs from the original Slay the Spire, we would still be here, all these years later, playing poison decks!

Honestly, I climbed all the way to Ascension 10 with the Silent, trying out every type of deck I could; Sly-Discard focused decks, Shiv decks, heavy-defence decks, and yet, once more, I was drawn to the poison.

Judge your successes by the sacrifices made to achieve them.

While these other decks do work fairly well, there’s something about the consistency of the poison builds that the others struggle to replicate. While other decks try desperately to get past high-blocking monsters, poison cuts right through, corrupting them from within.

So, let’s take a look at the Silent in Slay The Spire 2, and just how to make the most of her potent poison powers.

Build Overview

Douse your opponents in poison, and watch them suffer! Easy, right? Well, I’m afraid it’s not always that simple.

Poison has always been an extremely potent strategy in Slay The Spire. Not only does it get past your opponents' block, but it triggers at the beginning of their turn, unlike Debuffs like Doom, which trigger at the end.

While Poison is amazing when you’ve built up enough stacks, the deck can be slow, especially at the beginning of the game. If the rewards don’t feed you the right amount of cards to get the stacks going, Act 1 can be especially punishing. In this case, we need to run quite a few blocking cards to help us survive.

Try to cut as many unnecessary cards from your deck as possible, through random events and through the shop. Strikes should be the first thing to cut, as our physical attacks are going to be few and far between here.

You can focus on relics that give you Dexterity or other cards which keep you alive. By the time you hit late Act 2 / Early Act 3, the build should start to take shape.

Key Cards

Poisonous Potential

Slay The Spire 2 Poison Cards

What makes this deck so consistent is the abundance of Common and Uncommon Poison cards. These are all pretty strong and build a solid foundation for the deck.

However, there are a few rare cards that are pretty important to have. You don’t need to have them all, and in some cases, you can actually get by without them, but if you see them offered, you’ll immediately want to snap them up.

Accelerant

Common

This is a really simple card that gives a nice chunk of damage and poison. Don’t be afraid to upgrade this ASAP.

Common

This is generally your bread and butter for inflicting poison. Not super powerful, but this skill tag will help us later on.

Uncommon

While you do need to have poison already inflicted on your opponents, this card gives a massive 9 poison for 1 energy.

Uncommon

This is an amazing blocking tool when your poison reaches higher stacks. It can save you when enemies are about to produce a huge attack. However, do remember that this card exhausts, so save it for special situations.

Uncommon

This card can feel a little slow at times, and works better when you have a decent amount of energy and draw generation. Playing this early in the fight is essential.

Rare

Because this deck is highly skill-reliant, doubling the amount of poison you can inflict is extremely powerful. This can also help you when you need a little extra block to get by.

Rare

This one is a little situational and should only be picked up if you can afford the high energy cost. If you’re playing a hybrid build that utilises many Shivs, this could be a great addition.

Rare

If you see this, grab it immediately. This is, without a doubt, the most powerful poison card, and it seems to be a direct response to Catalyst being pulled from the card pool. I would argue this is even better than Catalyst, because it applies to every monster as soon as it's played. The only problem you might have is your poison stacks running out when you don’t draw the right cards. Noxious Fumes helps massively in this regard.

There are quite a few poison cards I haven’t mentioned here: Cards like Snakebite, Haze and Corrosive Wave. By all means, grab these cards when you see them, but it doesn’t mean you’ll always be able to play them.

Whether it’s because they cost too much, or they require certain synergies to be able to function, sometimes these will be dead in your hand, bricking your draws.

Silent Staples

Slay The Spire 2 Draw Options

In addition, this is just your core pool of cards; it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be picking up other cards to supplement your poisoning powers.

There are certain cards which are pretty amazing in any Silent deck. Remember, whatever archetype you’re playing, as your deck gets larger and more unwieldy, it’s important to start running a good number of draw cards. Here are a few to keep in mind:

  • Prepared: Upgraded, this will allow you to draw 2 cards for free, while opening up an opportunity for discarding Sly cards, or strikes that you don’t need.
  • Acrobatics: This is pretty similar to the previous card, just giving you even more draw potential.
  • Escape Plan: This is a free draw with an upside!
  • Adrenaline: This, like Offering, is one of the best cards in the game, and should be picked over almost anything else. It simply gives you more energy and free cards, extending your turns, and allowing some crazy plays. Grab this over everything, apart from maybe Accelerant.

In addition, remember you need to focus on staying alive while inflicting as much poison as possible, so upgrade your Neutralise and don’t be afraid to grab cards like Leg Sweep, Footwork and Afterimage.

Rolling in Relics

Slay The Spire 2 Silent Relics

So, you know which cards to pick now. Honestly, that’s only half the battle. Without some good relicsat your back, you’re going to struggle to push through to the later Acts.

Before you start playing the poison build for good, you should try to unlock the poison-related relics by playing a few times with The Silent. Here is a good selection to look out for:

  • Snecko Skull: This will add 1 additional poison stack every time you inflict it upon your enemies. Naturally, this is better when you’re afflicting them with small amounts and frequently. This is great with Envenom and Noxious Fumes.
  • Twisted Funnel: At the start of each combat, enemies will be automatically dealt 4 poison stacks. This is perfect for cards like Bubble Bubble, giving you a great turn 1.
  • Toxic Egg: You’re going to be playing a lot of skills, so having these immediately upgraded is perfect.
  • Unsettling Lamp: This doubles the first debuff you inflict once per combat.

In addition, any relics that give you block, energy generation, or even Max Health are always welcome. The Silent is extremely fragile, so anything that helps keep her alive is a bonus.

Blessings from the Ancients

Slay The Spire 2 Silent Ancient

Getting the right boons from the Ancients is going to give your decks a massive boost in power. Just remember, before going in, anything that gives us more energy so that we can do as much work on the first turn is generally pretty good. In addition, we don’t want to bloat the deck, so anything that gives us a chance to trim the fat is great here.

Neow is pretty simple: look to remove strikes, gain money, or even boost your Max HP. This choice is a nice bonus, but it won't change your entire game.

Next up is Act 2. Here are some choices to look out for:

  • Orobas: Alchemical Coffer can be great, especially if you have an upgraded Alchemise. In addition, Electric Shrymp can help get off some early poison for free.
  • Pael: Relax can be pretty powerful here, especially if you brick on your first hand. Also, Tears and Flesh should be good if you have a lot of draw but not much energy.
  • Tezcatara: As I always say, just like Adrenaline, Brightest Flame is amazing. However, Cocoa can be great for your first turn, seeing as though your initial relic gives you extra card draw. Biiig Hug is also great to get rid of unwanted strikes.

In Act 3, there are a few things we’re going to want to keep our eyes peeled for:

  • Darv: If you get the chance to pick Dusty Tome, grab it. You get access to Wraith Form, which is one of the most powerful cards from Slay The Spire 1. 3 Turns of intangible is ridiculously broken. If you pair this with Nightmare, you’ll be set for the whole game.
  • Nonupeipe: If you have Alchemical Coffer, Delicate Frond is a no-brainer. However, Apotheosis, Looming Fruit and Signet Ring can also be very strong.
  • Tanx: Throwing Axe is great for re-applying poison, while the Whistle can buy you an extra turn if needed.
  • Vakuu: Distinguished Cape can be great if you need a couple extra turns to set up your poison. Jewelled Mask is good in pretty much every deck, especially if you already have Accelerant, which is game-winning. Sere Talon can also help in this regard.

Naturally, you might not get these specific picks offered to you, so just grab whichever helps your deck at that moment. Your deck might always look perfect by the start of Act 2 or 3, but these blessings will help give you the extra boost needed to make it great!
