If you were worried that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 would take its foot off the gas compared to the first season, Studio Trigger seems to have put those concerns to rest. Netflix dropped the first major trailer for its upcoming sci-fi series (that’s set to debut this fall), and it’s a complete sensory overload.

We get our first look at the show’s new four-character main cast in motion, with plenty of explosions, murder, and grainy video footage. Much of the trailer features VHS recordings captured by Roman Carax, a young cinephile hooked on analog media. It appears his quest to document Night City introduces him to the hyperviolent sickos who make up the rest of the gang.

The crew consists of D, a Snake Nation netrunner out for revenge for the destruction of his clan; Talia Yang, an ex-corpo capable of some impressive acrobatics; and Weak “King” Kingsley, a veteran Edgerunner whose undulating eyes make it clear he’s suffering from cyberpsychosis. King brutally kills a bunch of guys, and it is admittedly pretty rad. The trailer’s theme, “You Can’t Run From Me” — written by Maria Kelly and Drew Polovick, and performed by Rico Nasty — is the type of angsty jam that fits this setting quite well.

While it’s difficult to make out specifics beyond random acts of extreme violence, the kinetic action suggests the new season’s animation will be up to snuff. While Studio Trigger founder Hiroyuki Imaishi won’t be directing the latest run, Edgerunner’s animation co-director Kai Ikarashi seems to be doing well with the role. Bartosz Sztybor is returning as showrunner, and Masahiko Otsuka is coming back for writing duties as well. Former animation co-director Ichigo Kanno is taking over as the lead character designer.

The new series is a 10-episode standalone set in the same universe as CD Projekt’s Cyberpunk 2077, meaning it probably won’t have a happy ending. 2022's Cyberpunk: Edgerunners proved a beloved hit for Netflix and is credited with helping kickstart Cyberpunk 2077’s comeback after the game's infamous launch. The show boasted a convincing setting, incredible visuals, and a lovable band of outsider freaks. It was quite good. While following up on that won't be easy, this first look at Edgerunners 2 is quite promising.
