Epic Games Giveaway This Week Mixes Grim WW1 FPS with Adorable Camping

Life is all about finding a healthy balance. Sometimes, that works out by flip-flopping between extremes, or at least that's what Epic is trying to say with this week's giveaway.

The two featured games in its weekly freebies are Isonzo, an incredibly traumatic and realistic World War I shooter, and Cozy Grove, an adorable chill game that is best described as Animal Crossing with spirits.

The juxtaposition is intense, but it makes perfect sense when you think about it. Once your mental health is in tatters after running headlong into a machine gun bunker in a snowy mountainside, you will need a therapeutic break in the wild.

Isonzo: An Alpine Nightmare

BlackMill Games has built up quite a reputation with the WW1 Game Series. Starting with Verdun way back in 2015, the franchise grew with Tannenberg (2017) and Isonzo (2022).

As the studio prepares to launch Gallipoli later this year, BlackMill decided to give new players a taste of what it's cooking.

Isonzo boasts a small but extremely loyal playerbase, with populated servers around the clock. The game depicts the brutal battles for the Isonzo Valley between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, blending stunning Alpine landscapes with the horrors of war.

This is an unforgiving, gritty game, but in a way that feels balanced and is extremely rewarding once you get into the groove.

Cozy Grove: Haunted Camping

'Surprise... it's haunted!' The goofy disclaimer on the Cozy Grove entrance sign tells you all you need to know about this cozy game.

You play as the Spirit Scout, camping in haunted grounds and helping soothe the local ghost population.

The basic gameplay dynamics are similar to your average Animal Crossing game, but what sets Cozy Grove apart is how visibly your actions transform the world around you.

Unlike more binge-worthy titles, Cozy Grove is deliberately made to get you a good hour or two of gameplay every day. After you're done with the daily tasks, you can still mess around by crafting, fishing, and other menial activities, but you cannot mindlessly play till the end of the game in one sitting.
