FBI Investigating Malware On Steam After A Bunch Of Indie Games Were Revealed To Be Hiding Malicious Files

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has announced that it is seeking information from victims who were potentially scammed by games “embedded with malware” on Steam over the past two years. The FBI’s “Steam Malware Investigation” alert, which was made public on March 11, is asking those affected to come forward voluntarily, and states that victims of the Trojan-horse-infected Steam scams “may be eligible for certain services, restitution, and rights under federal and/or state law.”

“The FBI’s Seattle Division is seeking to identify potential victims installing Steam games embedded with malware,” reads the statement on the official FBI.gov website. “The FBI believes the threat actor primarily targeted users between the timeframe of May 2024 and January 2026.” The statement notes that seven specific games are the target of the FBI’s investigation: BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.

The curious part about the information on the FBI’s page is the mention of only a singular “threat actor.” This more than implies that they already have reason to believe that only one person or, more likely, one group, is behind all seven of the malware-infested games listed.

Now, given that the identities of those behind BlockBlasters were (at least partially) revealed, which is information the FBI definitely has access to, I’d wager they’re after the same crypto-scam Telegram group that was tied to the scam.

While all of the malware-infested games listed in the FBI’s investigation are public knowledge at this point, BlockBlasters is easily the most infamous example, as the scam ended up stealing $32,000 from streamer Raivo Plavnieks (RastalandTV) during a cancer fundraising stream on Twitch.

The outrage led to internet denizens tracking down conversations between the scammers behind the game, during which they stated that RastalandTV would simply “make it back in a few hours.” Here’s hoping that the FBI shows these psychopaths the same level of remorse.
