First Dune 3 trailer shows Paul, Chani and Robert Pattinson's Scytale

On a more positive note, here's Robert Pattinson looking deliciously weird

Legendary and Warner Bros. have released the first trailer for Dune: Part Three, the "epic conclusion" to director Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy of films, heralding a grim, but darkly beautiful end to the franchise — for now. It's also a chance for us to hear star Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown) sing a song again, this time a guttural war chant.

Dune: Part Three's first trailer is light on storytelling, though we learn about Paul Atreides and Chani's children, and see glimpses of the cost of the jihad fought in Paul's name. In Frank Herbert's novel, the religious war consumes more than 60 billion lives, and the trailer alludes to Muad'Dib himself being consumed by that conflict.

"I'm not afraid to die," Paul says in the trailer. "But I must not die. Yet."

Dune: Part Three stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Javier Bardem as Stilgar, Florence Pugh as Empress Irulan, Charlotte Rampling as Gaius Helen Mohiam, and Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia, who reprise their roles from previous Dune movies. Jason Momoa is back as Hayt (née Duncan Idaho) from the first Dune, and Robert Pattinson is new to the cast as Scytale, a Tleilaxu Face Dancer. Other newcomers include Isaach De Bankolé as Farok, and Nakoa-Wolf Momoa as Leto II Atreides and Ida Brooke as Ghanima Atreides, the twin children of Paul and Chani.

Director Denis Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplay for Dune: Part Three with Brian K. Vaughan. The third and apparently final film in Villeneuve's film trilogy is based on Frank Herbert's 1969 novel Dune Messiah.

Dune: Part Three will be released in theaters on Dec. 18, and will dominate IMAX screens that week. (Yes, that's the same day that Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters, setting up "Dunesday".)
