Sunrise and Shaft's next anime collaboration could be a match made in heaven
Image: NetflixStrategic collaborations aren’t novel in the anime industry. Major studios, from MAPPA to Madhouse, often rely on extensive outsourcing to get projects across the finish line, including tasks like digital painting, in-between frames, and background art. These are normally the most specialized, labor-intensive tasks that would slow down production, though full episodes can sometimes be outsourced, which is called gurosu uke (グロス請け) in the anime industry.
But few anime projects are co-helmed by two powerhouse studios in quite the same way as Netflix’s new Fool Night adaptation. While the series premiere doesn't have a specific release date beyond a 2026 window, the newly announced project is already attracting attention for bringing together two of the industry’s most notable studios in Sunrise and Shaft, whose visual identities couldn't be more different.
Based on the acclaimed ecological horror manga by Yasuda Kasumi, Fool Night takes place in a future world where humanity has pushed itself to the brink. The sun is obscured by permanent cloud cover, while Earth is locked in an endless winter, and most plant-life has gone extinct. To combat an ever-increasing oxygen crisis, society has embraced a new technology known as "Transfloration," which allows near-death humans to be transformed into oxygen-producing plants.
Its bleak premise has helped the manga secure a reputation as one of the more distinctive science fiction stories in recent years, sitting alongside hits like The Color of the End: Mission in the Apocalypse, The Summer Hikaru Died, and Choujin X. With director Atsushi Yukawa at the helm and two legendary studios sharing production duties, the anime adaptation of Fool Night is shaping up to be one of the medium's most fascinating case studies in recent years.
What's the Fool Night manga about?
Image: NetflixAt the center of Fool Night is Toshiro Kamiya, a young man struggling to survive in a society built around scarcity. Living in poverty, Toshiro works tirelessly to pay taxes, cover daily expenses, and support his mother suffering from a mental illness. But as the crushing realities of his world continue to erode his hope, he eventually chooses a path to become a "Spiriflor," a human transformed into plant-life through Transfloration, which leads to several unexpected side effects.
While the premise sounds like straightforward dystopian science fiction on paper, Fool Night quickly evolves into something stranger and unsettling. The series blends social commentary, existential drama, body horror, and psychological storytelling into a narrative that explores what desperate people are willing to sacrifice for survival in a world that's already well out of options.
That unique mix of dark themes has helped the manga stand out in an increasingly crowded field. Rather than focusing on grand battles (86 Eighty-Six) or a post-apocalyptic adventure (Heavenly Delusion), Fool Night is more interested in examining the emotional and societal consequences of a civilization trying to save itself through increasingly desperate measures.
It's the kind of story that relies as much on atmosphere and visual symbolism as it does on plot, which makes the choice of dual animation studios particularly interesting.
What makes the Fool Night anime an industry game-changer?
Image: NetflixThe series is being helmed by Atsushi Yukawa and animated through a collaboration between Sunrise and Shaft, a first not just for the two individual studios but the industry writ large.
Sunrise, now operating under Bandai Namco Filmworks, has built its reputation on grounded world-building, detailed environments, and some of anime's most iconic science fiction settings. The studio's work on franchises like Mobile Suit Gundam, seen most recently in the smash-hit sequel to Gundam Hathaway, as well as classics such as Cowboy Bebop, Ergo Proxy, and Code Geass, has long showcased its ability to create believable societies under extraordinary circumstances. It’s the perfect place to develop a post-apocalyptic world on the brink of total destruction.
Shaft sits at almost the opposite end of the spectrum. Despite its storied legacy, Shaft is less of a household name; it celebrated its 50th anniversary late last year with a special exhibition. Shaft is a rather unconventional story in the anime industry, as it became famous for its highly stylized visual language, distinctive shot composition, surreal imagery, and psychological storytelling largely driven by Akiyuki Shinbo, who joined the studio in 2004. Today, Shaft is best known for original works like the Monogatari series, Puella Magi Madoka Magica, and last year’s Virgin Punk.
That contrast between studios is exactly why the partnership feels so promising. Fool Night demands both grounded dystopian world-building and deeply surreal imagery. Its story revolves around people literally transforming into plants, blending beauty and horror in equal measure. Sunrise's talent for constructing believable futures paired with Shaft's knack for visualizing psychological turmoil seem uniquely suited to capturing the manga's tone, and judging by the debut trailer, the pair have nailed the vibes wonderfully.
When is the Fool Night release date?
