Pokémon Pokopia takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has disappeared. It’s a tragic setup, and fans are taking that sad story and running with it. One of the prevailing fan theories is that Pokopia could be a prequel to the Mystery Dungeon series, which also casts the player as a Pokémon in a humanless world. Whether that actually adds up with what happens in Pokopia is a conversation for another day, because we’re here to talk about how some fans are preparing their Pokopia worlds for this inevitability by recreating some of the iconic landmarks from the Spike Chunsoft dungeon crawlers.
In the original Mystery Dungeon, the player is a human who wakes up in the body of a Pokémon and integrates into a monster-driven society working as a member of a Rescue Team battling through procedurally generated dungeons. The series has some distinct, Pokémon-shaped structures that don’t appear in the other Pokémon games, and since Pokopia takes place in a world where humans have disappeared and also has you playing as a Pokémon, the connection is a pretty easy one to draw. We won’t get into any story spoilers about whether or not this adds up, but because people are already making the association, they’ve also started making some of the Mystery Dungeon series’ Pokémon-shaped landmarks in Pokopia, including the Pelipper-shaped post office and the Sharpedo Bluff.

Every day I wake up and see Pokopia players doing sicko shit while I am still trying to just make my Pokémon’s houses look pretty. Maybe I should also look to another Pokémon spin-off for inspiration and try to make Detective Pikachu’s office or something.
The Mystery Dungeon games have been pretty dormant. The last new game was 2015’s Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, but the original game was remade for Switch as Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX in 2020. The series still remains a fan favorite, though, and I’m surprised The Pokémon Company hasn’t dipped back into it considering how popular roguelikes have gotten in recent years.
